Unhappy I need new turbos

I noticed that my car didn't have that much pull in it as it used to when i first got it so i took it into the mazda dealer and the mechanic said that I needed new turbos

Does anyone know how much a new set will run me? If it costs too much then I'm going to strongly consider selling my car which I don't want to do since I've so much fun with it

screw the dealer, take it to rick. you could have a hose loose and they will tell you to get new turbos.

Yep....i've seen it alot....it's how i got my car cheap....Mechanic said the engine was bad....so i bought it to overhaul....ends up the reason it sounded weird was because of the "big street port" I bet the Grandson was mad when he got back from the military!

Jane, Jane, you need to spend more time on this forum!

Take it to Ivan in Sunnyvale or over to Rick's in Pleasanton.

Whatever you do, do not let a Mazda dealer touch your car. Well, MAYBE for an oil change. MAYBE.

I have alway heard that the mazda dealers are the worse people to work on your car...Plus it may just be a boost problem and your turbos are fine...it will take a 7 specialist to figure that out though...do you have a boost gauge? If you do it will help to diagnose a lot...it made night and day when I got my gauge in telling what was really going on..

just to give you an idea of how much this might cost if you absolutely need turbos:
new turbos: around $3000 (lots more with labor from Mazda)
used with just under 30,000 miles in good condition: $500, talk to canman6969 for the used turbos if you must.
don't go to a mazda dealer service garage, they don't know shiet.
get a SERVICE MANUAL, do some searches in this forum, and get someone to check your lines and hoses: save yourself the anger.

A little more information about your car would help. But more than likely, you've either got a hose popped loose, or some minor boost leak. The hose is easy to fix (a REAL rotary mechanic should be able to find it pretty easily) and the boost leak is most likely an IC hose.

But, since you asked, new turbos directly from Mazda: $3504.70 ... ouch.

Talk to local rotary shops. They can usually get you a better deal on brand spankin' new turbos. Turbos can also be rebuilt ... but, that is a different story.

I totally agree with all in here, being in NH, it is hard to find someone who knows rotary engines, YOU can really get screwed...........YOU really need someone who knows these types of cars!!

I went to one place and told them I had a rotary engine, can YOU believe they asked what do you mean, yes I put the metal to the pedal.

I did find this place and they used to race mazdas, they sat me down with a model rotary engine and told me everything about this type of car and what it needed to get to it's potential...hey anyone who sits you down in front of a model to explain, is ok in my book. so if anyone is from the NH area, I reccomend Accu-tech in Merrimack Nh.

Jane seems to have lost interest in this thread, LOL.

Jane, if you are reading this, again I recommend Ricks Rotary Performance in Pleasanton. He charges 100 per hour to troubleshoot. you will need to call him to get exact details, but he's really good and when I bring my car for troubleshooting he generally cost me 40-60 for the time.

IF he (or another shop) determines your turbos are fine, I would take the receipt to the mazda dealer and get your money back for the false diagnosis.

I gaurantee the dealer has NO clue whats wrong with your turbo's. Mazda dealers standard response Is new turbos for the reasons below.

1) they are idiots
2) they are idiots
3) the dealership gets 3500 bucks for new turbos
4) they are idiots.

Where in CA are you located? Northern CA or Southern CA? Check out the West RX-7 portion of this forum for a RX-7 specialist near you.

I have a set of SR upgrades that are having the primary turbo redone at BNR because Ray let a bad set of turbos out the door to me. I have since went with the 99 spec turbos, so if your interested in the upgraded set , drop me a line.

If the car idles fine, drives fine, and doesn't blow excess smoke, the turbos are good.

If it "doesn't pull like it used to" it's probably just a boost leak.

Hi Jane,

Try a set of new plugs too... It makes quite a difference.
Our rotary engine go thru them like nothing. And check for the famous hose blown off underneath the Black vaccum tank just behind the Alternator.

jack.

Jane call Ivan's autopalace at 408-730-0567, if you are in mountain view you should go to them, they are only 10 minutes away from you for christ sakes!! What is keeping you from going there instead of a crappy dealer?

Oh yeah, I think you should go single while the opportunity is presenting itself
