I got a question

This may sound stupid, seeming everyone is after more power and acceleration, but has anyone tried to run a FD with out any turbochargers. For some who don't care about the performance, but likes the looks. I am not saying that I am for that, but since I had a remanufactured engine installed only to find the turbos not working. They give no boost. When it left the dealer they explained that they were making a whining noise, however after driving it home there was no boost whatsoever. I would seem to get the engine running properly it would take some different tuning. When they designed the turbocharged engine they lowered the compression ratio. Looking forward to your comments.

From the post, I'm guessing the dealer installed the engine, correct? I would have someone who knows what they're doing check over the install. Maybe something is not hooked up properly. If the turbos are bad, there are guys in the for sale forum selling turbos all the time or, check ebay.
Going N/A (normally aspirated) is possible but, youre going to get your *** handed to you by alot of cars that normally would be no problem.

So you want to ditch the turbos just beacuse yours when bad? It's no big deal, you can find then for sale in the classified section daily. That would be a lot easier than trying to create an NA FD.

Take your car to a rotary specialty shop. Most dealerships don't have anyone that is qualified to work on Fd's. Your turbos probably work, but the mechanic doesn't know how to get them working.

Check with the guys in your regional forum for recommendations on a good shop.

I am soooo confused, you got your car back and you have no boost so you want to retune the car to run without the turbo's ???? why not just fix the problem? in order get the car to run right you will need to fix the turbo system. heres a tip since you had a dealer work on your car and now it doesn't work ummmmm take it back.

I have a hard time believing anyone would go through the trouble of putting a N/a motor in they're FD just to have less power...this doesn't make any sense...why even drive the car...just buy a shell and put sand bags under the hood and park it in you living room if all you like are the looks.

It's a dumb idea to run without turbos. It's not an FD without them. If you have no boost, then you either have a huge leak somewhere such as 2 or 3 clamps not installed properly, or a pipe is missing, or the turbos could be blown. As everyone has stated, used turbos are cheap.

If you had the dealership install it and something doesn't work, make them fix it. After all, you probably spent 5-6 grand having them install it. With that kind of money spent, I would go back and raise hell with the stealership (because that is how they are).

Well some of you guys didn' t disapoint me in your smart answers. I have had all three versions of the rx7 since 1978 and have been very satisfied with them. I am now 70 years old and I still have a love for them. I did purchase a turbo from e-bay and the dealer used what he said was the best between my old ones and the ones purchased. I have no intention of not replacing or repairing the turbos. I just wondered what the car would run like without them. I know it didn't run too well when they were not working. I had a 87 turbo and I had to rebuild the turbo at around 70,000 miles and it was sucessful. I do appreciate most of your answers and response to my thread. What classifieds to you normally see them for sale? Another response indicated that they may not be hooked up correctly and I am wondering the same. I indend to remove the turbo myself and check it out. I too believe the dealerships don't know diddly about the turbos. I guess it was my mistake to take it there to get a remanufactured engine. I have learned my lesson, not too old to learn new tricks. again thanks for the replys.

OK you win!!! 70 and still cruising in a FD SGD!

I would lean more towards something not being hooked up properly more so than the turbo's being completly shot considering usually worn turbo's simply seem to spool a little slower and perhaps not hit full boost....but you say they don't boost at all? I would also take it back and demand they go over they're work again.

check the class. here or ebay I see sets all the time for around the $300-$500 range

I wouldn't get too excited about the turbos being bad - there's QUITE a few things that can be hooked up improperly that can cause little or no boost. Loose intercooler couplers, messed up vacuum lines, etc.

There are quite a few rotary shops near you - I'm sure you can find a shop that can get the car running 100% for a reasonable fee. It's most likely something very simple.

Jimbo, why don't you bring the car my way and we can have a look at it.

Usually the turbos themselves can be left alone. They just bolt in and you're done, even the dealer can't mess that up. It's the vacuum hoses and other assorted piping that tend to cause the turbos to not work. Sometimes a hose is left loose or connected incorrectly. I've done a fair amount of work on this system and I feel pretty confident I can at least figure out where the problem(s) are centered.

If you're considering a shop to find the problem, KD rotary is the one I'd go to.

Dave

Jimbo, take degeesaman up on his offer or check with KDrotary (in New Tripoli PA)
http://www.kdrotary.com/ Either way, post back up on what you find out. For what it's worth, I doubt the car would run very well (if at all) without turbos, the engine managment would all wrong. There would be many other things that would also have to be changed. Far easier and cheaper to get it to run properly with the turbos.
Regardless, I hope the young(er) guns here slow down a little and give Jim some respect. He's been around rotaries a long time, and I've heard far "dumber" questions than his.
