Red face I got a 7 :D

After a looong trip out to upper NY state, Wisconsin has another RX-7.

Here are a few pics:

Looking down...
Everything open

I purchased the car (a '94 R2, modified) from KZ1 here on the forums. He's a great guy, and really knows his stuff. He took great care of the car, and it shows in the pictures I took above when I got home.

The trip home was cool, since I didn't realize how sharp the RX-7 looks. On the way from Wisconsin to New York state I didn't see a single RX-7 (of any generation) on any of the toll roads, although I did see a handful of RX-8s, several Porsches, and a Viper GTS. Needless to say, judging from the public as I drove along it must've seemed like I was driving a high-end exotic from Italy.

I dropped my sister off at Word of Life Bible Institute on the way back from picking up the car, and caused quite a stir in the parking lot. I kept getting "What kind of car is that?" questions. I probably could have given rides out to every girl on campus, but my family was antsy to get back on the road.

On the way back Border Patrol had a check going on the interstate, and when I pulled up I had three officers come over and ask me what type of car it was. That was pretty cool

When we came through Ontario a guy in a Probe GT honked and gave my the "OK" hand signal and yelled "NICE CAR!" out the window. I got the same treatment from a guy in lower Michigan in a Subaru hatchback.

Literally any car that passed from either direction the people were just staring. Particularly the ladies whom I would say averaged in ages from 25 - 40's. I guess the 7 doesn't quite appeal to my age group just yet. It's nice to know a '94 can get so much attention, a true testament to Mazda engineering.

I love everything about the car. It handles like a dream, and runs like a raped ape down the freeway. I haven't opened it up much (hardly ran the turbos), since it still scares the crap out of me. Maybe that's a good thing...

I hope this was the place to post this, if not I apologize. If any of you swing by northern Wisconsin we should meet up and cruise.

Make sure you get used to it before trying anything crazy. Thats one beautiful 7, looks kinda like mine You sound like you know wtf you are talking about, unlike most of the kids who come on here talking about how mad tyte their FD is. Make sure to mantain it well and search to learn about the car.

The only question I get while driving my car is "Is that a Miata?"

I try and stay away from "kids an FDs" discussions as much as possible. After driving the car with KZ1, and driving it back home I can say that is a WHOLE lot of car for someone who isn't used to driving something like this. It's an extreme from my daily beater ('91 626 LX), that's for sure.

I imagine I won't be doing anything crazy with it, period. It's enough for me to know that I've got more under the hood than 99% of the cars in the state.

Hey,

Congrats on a beautiful FD! I'd love to see a list of mods! Looks like my kind of taste, matching everything under the hood and keeping the car clean!

Wait? Crap, what's that on the back? A WING?! Are you nuts?! Take it off!

I got my first FD just 2 weeks ago, and got the same response coming home! Too bad you took the FD away from NY, I live upstate and you could have stopped by. If I saw you post you were going to NY to get an FD I would have loved to have you stop by on the way back. Or even met you at the Bible institute (some friends went there ).

I love black. Best car color, period. Besides that slug grabbing the hatch, I'd say you have a beautiful 7!

And BTW- How old are you?

Isnt that wing stock on the r1 or r2? I personally like it (small and suttle spoiler not a stupid aluminum wing or anything), and if its not stock then a ton of people have it.

nice car though.

LOL It's funny how 2 of you guys reminded me that that's the stock r1/r2 wing. I know that. I am just a Wingless-Rx7 nut. To me, ANY wing Stock or Aftermarket doesn't look nearly as clean, exotic, and just plain awesome as wingless.

It's just an opinion, but you should try it out

That's a NICE set of mods, it's pretty much the limit of what I would do to my car. However, she's running perfect in near-stock condition I might just wait for the rebuild day to go all out like that. Hmmm...

And probably paint my car black! :P

LOL, indeed. One of the things I like most about the RX-7 is the fact that it has nearly no markings on the car anywhere.

Well, this morning I pulled out of my driveway and was pulled over by a county cop. He told me that my exaust was illegal, and mentioned that *any* parts on a car that aren't stock are illegal. I'm like WTF? That would make my car 99% illegal...and about every vehicle on the road. Anyone know if this is true for Wisconsin, or was he just being a ***** because I'm young and driving a nice car? I'm not about to tear the car apart just to appease the DOT.

LOL yeah dude, it's all illegal. I don't know what the laws are in Wisconsin reguarding SMOG, but if you live in California and he saw what's under your hood, you would have been owned. That's why I am very stealthy with my mods, instead of getting polished intercooler/intake pipes, mine are black, black pullies, etc.

I never let him take a look under my hood, nor are there any emissions rules in WI that I am aware of (been living here all my life). I'm looking at the DOT rules and regulations as quick as my dialup can nab them, so far I haven't come across anything about my exaust.

Unless there's a law in Wi. about having anything aftermarket, period, he might be using "Good Judgement" about emissions.

A cop pulled my brother over for tints, even though they were done legal tint percentage, he just "knew by looking at it."

There is a possibility (Like eliminating cats) that your car has things that the State of Wisconsin deems "illegal" because of how it affect emissions (Do you even have emissions over there?) but I hate hearing how cops call people out based on their own "good judgement".

Good luck with that, and be careful, these cars pick up speed fast!

Minocqua? Holy cow, I drive through there once a year on the way to Mercer on vacation with my wife. Seems more like 4-wheel country to me. LOL. The countryside in your pics looks quite familiar.

As far as as that state cop is concerned, I would guess we are talking a little jealousy there. The only thing I can see that might get you in trouble is the removed emissions and midpipe. I bought my 3G from a fellow in Milwaukee last May. He had to take it through some sort of emissions testing for certification. He had no problems passing but he did have the precat, cat, air pump and rest of the fog devices intact. You will want to check with state DMV on the fog certification. It may have only applied to Milwaukee county, I'm not sure. IN a place like Minocqua, I can't imagine they are doing smog testing, but then Wisconsin is home of the dreaded DNR. For what it's worth, most of us can pass emissions with just the CAT (no midpipe) and air pump in place, so don't freak, just yet. You have one beautiful car. I wouldn't worry about losing a few HP with most of the emissions equipment in place, just don't remove the downpipe as that precat will destroy your car eventually.

While testing is far from common in WI, there are a few counties which require it.

Unfortunatly the WI DOT website doesn't mention much about after market parts, but most officers are only concerned with the noise levels.

I get lunch at the Subway in Mercer about once a week from where I work. It is 4-wheel country, you should see my little brother's CJ5 out in the woods.

I'm heading in to the county DOT office either tomorrow or Friday so I'll ask discreetly about it then. I think as long as no one (that knows what they are looking at) takes a serious gander under the hood I should be good to go.

Thanks a lot for the opinions and compliments guys, it's a beautiful car indeed!

Perfect, Vilas county isn't mentioned there. I think as long as I stay away from the tree huggers northwest of me I should be okay.

My car is noisy, but it's not overkill. That might be what the officer was getting at.

it is great to have another nicely modded FD around Minocqua! welcome.

i have a vacation home in oneida county and am generally "up north" on weekends. my fiance also has an fd... both white. i have never had any problems w the law in the area.

as to emissions... a small number of highly populated counties (around milwaukee/madison etc) have required emission testing. most counties, like oneida, vilas etc do not.

i bought my car in 99 and did get stopped for the first time in wis in May. window tint (exceeds wis standard) and noise. i received a warning and am supposed to fix it. the cop said any noise more than stock could require a remedy.

i actually had to agree w him as to my car. i had just installed a raceported Judge Ito motor and i run two garrett T04s w two three inch downpipes. it was insanely loud. i swapped catbacks w my ladyfriend and now run a Racing Beat CB and resonated midpipe and we are back to sanity...

good luck on your new purchase... my number is 715 356 6162

Hey Howard, I was actually hoping you'd notice my post. You probably wouldn't remember, but I've met you at Jim Walker's place (I used to work there). It would be cool to meet in Minocqua sometime before the snow flies and you could take a look at my FD and let me know what you think

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I'm beginning to think the cop mostly said all that about the exaust because I'm driving a nice car. Oh well, hopefully this won't happen everyday.
