I don't get it...check engine light

Hi Everyone:

I was about to start my car, and I put the car in the "ON" position and I noticed that the check engine light stayed on. So I shut off the car and opened up the Diagnosis box and used a paper clip to bridge the TEN and GND (the one next to TFA). I turned the key to the "ON" position and waited for an error code...and got nothing. So I pulled off the paper clip and turned the key to the "ON" position and the "Check engine" light stayed on. I'm a bit confused on what's going on...so anyone here can point out something I might be over looking?

did you start it? engine diagnosis (the CEL) will normally come on during startup but shut-off once the car is running.

I didnt' start it because I wanted to double check that everything is working right. I guess it's been a while since I started it and I wasn't sure if that was normal or not. I'll fire it up and see if it goes away like what you and Rynberg suggested. Thanks to both of you for your input!
