I've been working on my 3K hesitation problem recently. The grounding that's below has helped some, but more surprisingly has smoothed out my idle noticeably.

These were a bit less than $3 for each pack of three.


I used a small blow torch to remove the insulators, just heat and pull with a pliers.


I used the same blow torch to solder them on.


Here's a look at the finished deal. Note that like colored circles denote grounding points. All points are from motor to frame with the exception of the battery ground. This goes from battery to three different locations.

Several grounding points aren't visible. For instance the secondary turbo air intake to frame. I placed circles over the approximate areas. Everything used (bolted to) stock locations. I simply sanded and screwed down. In a few cases I replaced (rusted) bolts or added new ones to an existing threaded hole. Not visible here are downpipe to frame to trans and muffler to frame.

Not too bad for $30 or so. The wire was $0.22 per foot. I used two strands of 8 gauge for each connection as 4 gauge was too difficult to bend yet 8 gauge seemed too thin. Probably overkill, however wire is cheap. Use a hand (gardening) lopper (for cutting 1/2 inch and smaller branches) to cut the copper wire. This is much easier than a standard set of dikes.

My mechanic makes ground cables from welding cable . He makes the ends to fit the bolt or stud as needed . battery to motor ,motor to front subframe, uim to the abs mount . Also welding cable from the alt hot post to the fuse block . Neat clean and it works .

I was thinking that it wouldn't hurt to beef up the other half of the electrical path by working on the positive side of the battery ... maybe next ...

Thanks. Home Depo has the wire in Black, Green, and Red. Now that I think about it, black matches my rubber vacuum hoses perfectly.

I did the saem thing about three months ago, it works great. I chose the blue wire for mine.

Is it overkill to ground that many points? I was thinking when you said you grounded things that it was like 2-3 points. Now I have no electrical knowledge whatsoever, but is that really necessary?

I noticed the largest (idle) improvement with the battery to body to motor connection. The next two were the UIM to body (where the stock ground is) and body to DP to trans. This seemed to almost totally remove the 3K hesitation, once the car was hot. The other ones were simply because they were easy and cheap. Well, that and I figure that the connections will corrode with time. The extra connections should add longevity. I also plan on sealing the connections with something over the next few days ... maybe red enamel.
