huge coolant dump

i just got some parts in to fix a boost leak today and after i take care of it to go to the gas station around the block to fill up to celebrate my now boost leak free FD, i hear a loud screeching noise coming from the engine bay(hard to describe, you'd have to hear it) and got really nervous because it didnt sound familiar at all....

as i park and fill up at the gas station i notice a puddle of liquid coming from under my car, i put my finger in it and what do you know, its coolant...after a few minutes coolant starts gushing out from under my car and i can smell burning coolant and a little smoke coming from the radiator area.

i lost about a quart or so right there at the gas station, and left a trail going back home. i pop my hood and coolant is sprayed everywhere, and i find a hose undone

what should my procedure be to take care of this? and what is the thing called that my loose hose is supposed to attatch to?

sry for my newbieness, im still learning :\ any help is appreciated.

Put the hose back on....j/k Or put a new hose back on and get a new hose clamp. I use the hose clamps that have you screw on. I really dislike the factory hose clamps.

I have fought with many coolant leaks myself. But mine are not because hoses come off, it's the tiny pin-hole leaks that bug me.

Good luck to you though.

You shouldn't have driven it home. The fact that it popped at a gas station was an amazing piece of luck.

Hopefully you didn't overheat and ruin your motor driving it without all your coolant. Did the temp gauge needle rise above 8o'clock on that trip?

As for what broke, if it's the tank beside your battery, it's called an AST. Just search for "ast reliability" and you'll find plenty of answers.

sorry about being vague on the hose, i was going to put pictures up last night, but i couldn't, i'll have them up in a second.

dgessaman, i had not lost all of my coolant and the gas station was across the street i just limped home and turned the car off immediately

where is the coolant dump on this car?, because im going to flush the coolant, re-attatch the loose hose, then check the coolant pressure to see if that was the only leak. also whats the best place to fill coolant? theres a million coolant fills on this car haha....

you can see in the last pic the hose that came off is right behind the intercooler, next to the airbox, behind the air pump and next to the boost piping

The engine block drain is on the drivers side, in the center housing about 1" above the seal at the oil pan. The radiator drain is right under the radiator.

When you go to fill it, detach the hose nearest to the firewall at the throttle body. Fill the system slowly at the water pump housing (which is right by the loose hose). When it fills up walk away for 5 mins and see if it has gone down. When it's full, reattach the throttle body hose, reach down below the filler neck and squeeze the big hose (upper radiator hose). This should burp out any air in that hose. Then put the cap on and run the engine for several minutes. If the coolant buzzer goes off, stop the car and top off. By burping the hose and using the tb hose to relieve air, that's probably all you'll need to do.

1. is the water pump housing the one that the loose hose is supposed to connect to?

2."detach the hose nearest to the firewall at the throttle body" i need a visual for this...can you make a red circle around this... or can you describe which one exactly is the throttle body hose....thanks

1. Yes

2. It's the hose that connects to the throttle body really close to the firewall and at the top. The other end of that hose hides down under the UIM on the engine block. It's not in any of your pics.

Run a search for coolant flush. Or maybe there is a link the faq.

Distilled should not contain any minerals. I use the stuff you can buy at the grocery store.

drained coolant today through engine block drain, and replaced with 30ish coolant 70ish distilled water plus water wetter mixture, it took around 7 quarts or so total, after a few 7 minute idles, no leaks formed, so i was just that hose that came off that was causing the leak. trying to find a coolant pressure gauge(cant seem to find any...) so i can check to see if the coolant system will hold pressure...it seems to be doing good based on a few drives around the block.

Autozone will loan you a coolant pressure tester, but if you have stock ast you'll need a special adapter to fit to the car. The adapters are like $25/ea too.

A rotary shop should be able to do the test quick and easy since theyll surely have the right setup.
