How you launch your FD3 and Shift question

Hey everyone..

I am just curious..
When you are about to race, and really want to win.
How do you launch your FD3??

What RPM do you launch at?
Do you dump the clutch?
Or Ride it a little???
What RPM do you shift at??
Redline at 8000rpm or further?
or before ??

I kinda wiery about taking my FD3 rreal high
and dumping the clutch. Because I am scared to
blow the motor. and I usually shift when the
RPM warning Sound comes on..."because i do'nt want to blow the Motor"..

So that beeping sound signify anything besides getting close to redline?? is it ok to rev past redline??

a rotors power curve is usually around 6500-7000 rpm for when to shift. As in your lauch, tires is a big diff on that question, stock or something like it, just ride it out.
DONT OVER REV.... your engine will let you do it a
couple times, then you will be buying a new one

Heh. Dump the hell out of it. It's a sports car remember? And don't ever forget that. If you are afraid of using your sports car like one, maybe you should get a civic =P. j/k.

You could do a SEARCH.......

Even with larger rear tires, I think the general consensus is to launch at about 3000-3300 rpm. I just let my clutch out in one fast motion (I wouldn't call it a dump) as I go to WOT. I only have a downpipe right now and I have stock size Dunlop SP8000s. Also, since 1st goes by so fast, I shift as I hear the buzz. 2nd gear, I shift at 7500 rpm. 3rd gear, I shift in between 7k and 7.5k. Haven't had a race where I had to go to 5th ( ). I find the power drops off after 7500 rpm, there's really no point in redlining in higher gears as shifting at 7200 or so keeps you right in the heart of the powerband.

Note that if you have mods, especially a midpipe or hi-flow cat, your high-end might not drop off and you might be faster shifting at redline.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG IM CRYING!!

I am not laughing at him but people with pistons are so affraid of dumping the clutch becasue they might burn it out but the rotary crown is weary of popping a whole motor. I just find that kinda funny....also scary since Im buying one =]

Yea I got a civic, and it has one speed....

SLOOOOWWWW

and let me rephrase that comment about me being "scared to dump the clutch".

Its not about me being afraid, its about me loving my FD3. After dumping all this $$ into it.. It would be a shame to blow up the motor, and spending thousands to fix it. When I can buy me a body kit and a paint job.

Trust me, in a heat of a race. I abuse my baby, smoking my 350Dollar a tire Pzeros and taching it past redline.

Just wondering what the best method of launching a FD3 to get the best time.

Launching @3000-3300 seems a rather to low, I think i launch mine at around 4000-4500..

Does anyone use a Shift light tach???

With drag radials what has worked for me is to vary the revs between 2500-3500 let the clutch go, feel
the tires bite and spin a little at partial throttle then fully nail it. Shift at 7200 in 1st and 2nd and @7500
the rest of of the gears. Not a real easy car to launch if your not using slicks which most of us don't.
Also don't even drag race without a rear launch kit,the wheel hop will lead to something breaking
sooner or later.
Come to think of it something will break sooner or later anyway but at least you will have fun doing it...

if you rev higher then 4k your tires are gonna end up spinning then anything else. like everyone else has said let the clutch go around 3-3.5k

Ya I just went to the drag strip Friday and I was having a hard time lunching The max I was launching was 2500rpm Just not to get that nasty weal hop .I don't have a launch kit yet so I had do deal with weal hop ,but my best run was 13.00.
I guess that's not bad.

Launching is an art form ... so many factors, so much detail ... i am joking. Depending on the setup, yes, the commonly used 3000-3500rpm does work on street tires. I usually rev to just above 3000 and slip the clutch a little, before going WOT. I may actually not be going as fast ... it just FEELS faster.

As far as this shifting argument goes, almost every dyno plot I've seen shows that the power levels off at 6800 rpm and, in fact, drops at 7000-7200 rpm. So waiting for the beep or going further than 7000 rpm is 1) not making any more power (you're actually putting down less power!), 2) making you effectively slower, and 3) putting your RX-7 in danger. This is not a boinger and you can't just bounce off the rev-limiter like it's no big deal. Shift @ 7000rpm, and the next gear should come in at about 4800-5000 rpm, also keeping you in the power band (read: FASTER TIMES).

Street tires and drag radials are two different things though. On street tires, I launch at about 4k, and firmly release the clutch. When I was drag racing on drag radials (Nitto's) it was a little different. 7k RPM and drop the clutch like hot precat! Yeah, I have RP's drag launch kit and it helps the wheel hop, but what was happening was the CFDF clutch I was running would slip a bit and the car would launch like butter. 1.70's on the 60ft times and 12.30's through the 1/4. Downside of this was barely making it home from the track one day when the clutch was dying

Your results may vary.

on the street, i usually bring it up to about 4000-4100 and ride it out untill im at WOT. When done correctly, it feels like a freight train hits you from behind. And when shifting, i usually bring it up to about 7100, i feel the power drop considerably anywhere higher than that. its all abouyt the feel

I do the same exact thing, launching at 4k and shifting at 7200rpm. It depends on the mods that you have and if your engine was ported or not.

Ok, so you at a light waiting for Green,
or someone flagging you to start.

Do you guys bounce your throttle to desired RPM
or Keep steady on the Gas to your RPM then Launch??

As for a Launch KIT, What is it? and what does it do??

Thanks
