how to wire up fuel gauge for testing

I have the fuel gauge and hanger out of car and trying to get it to work on bench i have wiring diagram but doesnt realy help it shows its some how connected to a water level

Is there somthing els in car that i need to get it to work that im missing

Are you just testing the gauge and the sender for operation? The gauge will need power and ground for the needle to sweep. You should be able to set a volt meter to resistance and check two wires from the sender. Sweep the arm on the sender and the resistance should change. If the sender works, the gauge is broke, if the sender doesn't work, the gauge is fine.

I couldnt get the stock dial to work but i had an old cheap one its bit slow but works

Not sure if that qualifies as 'slow', stock gauge is slow too - old style.
But I'd check the stock gauge with the multimeter instead of the sending unit to finally make sure if it's dead or not.
EDIT: think it's ~2 mins that the stock gauge would read the correct values. It's somewhere in the electrical troubleshooting manual.

Whats the little can type cylinder attached to the hanger on
green wire ?
Is it the low level light ?

Ah I shouldn't had said multimeter but a gauge tester where you create a given resistance (instead of measuring it) for some reason i though you had it.

Never heard of this before could you send me a link to one please will defo be usefull in future

Had a quick look on net but nothing keeps coming up with ohms meters
