how to troubleshoot stock wastegate issues?
how to troubleshoot stock wastegate issues?
hey every1,
I have a problem of making only 7psi of boost, and it builds VERY slow at that (i am NS with a wrapped DP, and i get 7lbs around 4600rpm, used to have it by 2900). I double checked the manual boost cont, lines, vac leaks, etc and they all check out. Id like to check the function of the Wastegate and the actuator...any tips/suggestions on the best way to go about it? I thought about just using the air comp to pump 10psi into the vac line that goes to the actuator and look for the rod physically moving and the sound of the wastegate clicking open.
Let me know if you have easier/better ways of troubleshooting a stuck open wastegate/non responsive actuator!

Is you wastegate ported or not?
Couple of months ago I was visiting KDR and chating to Skip and Dave so I was telling them that I ported the wastegate and they where like "you should have left it alone b/c it'll crack around and lots of gases will bypase through the wastegate even when is closed and you'll have lots of boost creep and no more than 7 psi of boost max"
I been haveing the same problem and never got the chance to troubleshoot that issue for a while now, that may not be the problem, could be a bad actuator or a leaky hose...
The other day I was trying to move the wastegate actuator rod, it seemed like it closed up more when I pushed it, I did 2 runns after and the first time I got like 9 psi and than just got 6 after that.
So something is wrong with the wastegate...

double check to see if your tca is still wired all the way open. also, you can rig up a micro switch to check if the wastegate is moving and/or use a portable vaccum/boost checker (mighty mite makes one or sears/craftman makes one as well) to see when exactly is your wastegate is moving. also, have you double checked your bov's as well as for vaccum/boost leaks? i once had a huge hole in my bov line and never knew it till i took the lines out and checked the underneath.
P.S. what kinda manual boost control are you using and how did you test it?

off topic and included in my first post...I replaced the turbo to WG hoses when i put in a manual boost controller. The hoses are still in very good condition with no cracks.
The wastegate isn't ported, so i know thats not the issue.
but back to the actual topic. how do i DIAGNOSE a bad wastegate or acuator? If i can push it closed more by hand? If i put 10psi into that line to the actuator and the rod doesnt move? That's what im looking for, problem solving the actual wastegate/actuator

I checked all 5 vac lines i have left from NS, and there arent any leaks, but ill take the UIM off and double-double check them anywayI use a TurboXS MBC. I tested it by hooking a boost gauge up to the other side, and w/o changing my settings, ran 10psi into the first side via air compressor. It bled off 3psi like it should.

Even if the TCA is not wired open properly/enugh, exhaust gases will push it open at all times, you'll just hear rattling noise.
Sounds alot to me like a wastegate actuator problem to me.
