My question is unless you're broke and can fabricate good, why bother with the FC tranny? They still have the same problem with the 5th gear synchro and the FD tranny is a newer & slightly better unit.

We didn't install a T-II (or FC) transmission in that car - We simply used the T-II synchros in the FD Transmission. Mazda has since realized the problem with the FD 5th gear synchro and superceded that part with the earlier synchro- The gearbox internals are the same but the cases and bellhousing, tailhousing, and the clutch type make interchanging between the two -very difficult. However you can extract the internals from either and fit them into either case- provided you change the main input shaft appropriately (the 3rd gen has a shorter input shaft) otherwise their isn't any "stronger" gearsets, shafts, etc between the two. Now if you want a stronger gearbox- we can have all the shafts, and gears Isotropic polished and all parts cryogenically treated, and coated with thermal barrier coatings
