How To: Oil Temperature & Oil Pressure loggable

i just finished installing FJO's oil temperature & pressure gauges. i have always wanted a read on my oil temps, especially since i will be ontrack this season. of course the OEM oil pressure gauge has been temperamental.

here they are all lit up. (there is a dimmer switch if you get tired of dash disco.)

there is always the question as to where to put the sender. some have put it near the oil filter but that measures oil temperature after the oil coolers. i wanted to know the temp in the oil pan. i removed the useless oil level unit, gutted it and welded on an aluminum bung. my FJO temperature sensor screws right in. do not do what i initially did... i copied the mounting flange in SS and welded a bung on. i used the Right Stuff and of course it leaked. you really need to use the factory aluminum piece as it has an O ring. no leaks.

pressure was easy. i just screwed in the FJO pressure sensor to the original OEM oil pressure sensor port. (you need to remove the Elbow to gain access.

the gauges wire to the key for 12 V, wire to ground and have snap fittings to the sensors. they also have a wire for min-max readings and a dimmer wire.

temp is avail in F or C.

i use an FJO's pressure sensor to log fuel pressure at my regulator. i use another to log engine backpressure.

oil pressure will now be loggable.

Hey nice job, I got the R1 twin oil coolers I just installed the oil temp and pressure in that banjo bolt (in the pictures) when it's 75 degree my temp at cruise was around 170, now at idle it creeps up, and my pressure read the same as my clock (oem). I am really curoius to see how hot it's in the engine like what u did, please do a follow up when get a chance. Btw how did manage to find the right thread for the oil pressure sensor?

"how did manage to find the right thread for the oil pressure sensor?"

the FJO sensor screws right in.

"just installed the oil temp and pressure in that banjo bolt"

the banjo bolt transports engine oil just after it has been thru the oil coolers. i wanted to monitor the temperature before cooling... since we run similar coolers it will be interesting to compare. i should be out and about today.

BTW, on the subject of oil cooling, check out my thread "Dual oil coolers cheap." it is a "how to" adapt a driver's side cooler to the pass side.

wait are you running a wire from the FJO sender to your datalogit?

Nice Howard... I always wondered about the sensor placement for oil temp. Mine is at the pedestal (Re Speed). After my stock dual coolers for cheap mod. my temps read 130- 160 F @ cruise after warm -up and 190 -215 F when beating on the turbos. I was worried about the oil temp. being too cold at cruise. Maybe its just the sensor placement. G

yes, just like logging the fuel pressure and engine backpressure...

since the Datalogit has only 4 auxiliaries i have to do a bit of switching.

You need to get a black box datalogit. It has 8 inputs. This is confirmed in the later versions of the FC-Edit software (universal FC-Edit vs the beige box FD3S software) when you set it up for a black box you get 8 inputs to configure versus the 4 when you set it to beige box. For someone who does so much datalogging with auxilary inputs I think you really need to switch.

Hey unfortunenately I did mine years ago when FD spare parts was hard to find, I got the lines from mazmart for $230.00 and the oil cooler from the UK (JimmysRx7) for $265.00 shippep back in 1996.
Also I happen to monitor my oil temp today at 100 degree outside temperature, (I happen to have those rearview mirror) that display temperature. Anyway not beating on the car oil temp went to 250 degree crusing at 80 mph. The theromostat for the rearview mirror it's in front of the left side oil cooler. That is my oil temp reading in the hot weather, let hear from you.

Hmm...is there ANY point to monitoring temps at the pedestal, then?

Since I just installed a ReSpeed pedestal (no temp gauge yet), it just gets me wondering.

hopefully there is no correlation, but since my temp and press setups are now operative it has been raining.

8 inches of rain in 2.5 days. i don't (currently) live in the Rain Forrest), we are talking wisconsin.

rumor is tues-wed w/b dry.

FDeez... once i get a baseline on my oil temp in the pan i will shoot my banjo bolt going into my filter and see if i can give you a differential. i do run two OEM oil coolers.

My sending unit appears that it might have a little leak too, and it's acting faulty just like everyone else has described. So, I'm changing that tomorrow. This is the only leak the car has, but it sure does stink when I park the thing. I hope it's the only leak!

Thanks!

I believe the sensor you are talking about is where the stock coolant temperature sensor would be. It's going into a coolant jacket, so it wouldn't leak oil.

I would believe it matter where u mount the oil temp thermostat, for example howard have his directly on the oil pan, and htis is before it reach to the oil coolers so it might be even hotter, Mine is mount after the oil cooler cool it off and send it back into the engine (banjo bolt) so it suppose to make the oil cooler when return into the engine, I starting to believe when it's hot (100 degree) the factory oil cooler are not enough to me. Also I got the 99 complete fron end including the brake duct that suppose to help out a little of cooling to the oil coolers, and I also have a mazdaspeed replica vented hood. I would think that with my setup my oil temp should be below that.
