Good one.

I just stole mine from some guy in Charlottsville VA.

Wanted an RX-7 ever since I was 10. My dad had a 1st gen. and I wanted one of those but then the 2nd gen came out, I still wanted a 1st gen. Then the glorious 3rd came out and I had my mind set on a '93! I bought it once I graduated and turned 18! Worked for it and got it. I'm now almost 20 (birthday is April 15th) and still own the car! It's finally moving along as my project track car as I will be looking to buy another car soon. I guess anyone young that buys one is just lucky they have rich parents. Sure it was your money but how did you get the money? Someone gave it to you, cause I know a 17 year old or younger person can't work for a high paying job and not spend money on the way up to $12,000+ or however much the car cost.

I had about $10k and wanted to buy a FD outright. After talking to Lance at www.LAMotorcars.com he convinced me that with these cars you really get what you pay for.

I opted to get the most pristine one I found. Absouletly perfect condition, all stock, all service records with just about everything replaced under warranty, and still had a Mazda warranty. 3k miles on motor, 7k on oem turbos. Blue book was $19,900 and I told him I would only finance $7k, so he worked with me and sold it for $15,800.

I'm so happy I chose this over over the $10k cars. After 3 years of owning it, it still doesn't have the mileage and is in alot better condition then the cheaper cars. Well worth the extra $7k.

hey...I bought a MB 94 from him back in august...drove my 69 Camaro SS from here in TN and then drove the 7 back.

Cool guy, not sure if he knew...but he failed to tell me that the car had previously been wrecked...looks like it had been run into a ditch and then repaired well on the outside but under the bumper looked like ***. Everything is finally working 100%.

BTW...I am 19, and was 19 when I bought it myself.

the impression i get from many of the 16 year olds who pay for it themselves is that while that may be true, they don't have to pay for anything else themselvs. makes it not so hard, even on burger king wages...

You guys who have paid for your car yourselves when 16-18yo, what sort of jobs did you have?

I worked part-time in a local shop from when I was about 10yo and when I was 16 was only on about 1.5 an hour. Obviously things will be different in the US compared to the UK, but for a 9k car that would mean working 6000 hours on top of attending school, or 57 hours a week for 2 years.

This is assuming not spend any money at all during the 2 years. As it was I had to buy clothes, shoes, etc and used the rest to get computer games, music and sports equipment.

I got a job in a Vet clinic when I was 17 and moved up to a Vet Tech. I was living at home and rent was the only thing i didn't pay.

I had the Del Sol at the time so gas and insurance wasn't anything.

It would be interesting to see how many FD owners live at home. It's entirely different buying it yourself when you don't have a mortage and bills to pay versus living with the parents.

Yeah but buyin the car when we are 16-18 is just our advantage. Dont hate on us just becuase we bought our FDs younger than you did. We just found our cars at the right times. I dont brag to people because i have an FD and so do you and i am this much younger than you. If you were in our position you would of done the same thing. Its not like we are your age and still living at home to afford our cars. But hey we are all rotary heads here. We need to stick together. Or thous dam DSMers will take us over.

Yes, living at home is a HUGE advantage, over half my income goes toward my car payment & insurance, that would not be possible without the loving kindness of my mom & dad.

I'm 21 years old, making ~$14/hour, sometimes I try to tell myself I could do this without my parents' help, but I realize I would need to get some roommates and live in a trashy little place to be able to afford this car if I didn't have a free place to stay. It's still cheaper to live at home and make payments on my dream car than to live at college dorms though.

Next order of business is getting into a house in the next couple years...
