Question How to make homemade cold air intake?

After looking at all the available cold air intakes for the FD3, I concluded that I could make something just as good for MUCH cheaper. I'm going for something like the pettit. It looks fairly simple. Has anyone done this? Do you have a list of all the parts you used? I figure I'll need 2 filters for the intakes, and 2 smaller filters. One for the air pump, and the other for a tube that looks like it's coming from somewhere on the intake. The bov's can go just to straight air correct? Then I'd build a box/heat shield for it all to be surrounded by. After that I'd try to come up with a duct that would direct fresh air right to the filters.

Any input is appreciated! I'd like to hear from some people who have done this... or know what's required.

Thanks
Chuck

I made one that takes 10 minutes and costs $8.27. I also promise you its better than any of the aftermarket cold air boxes.

YOu can do a cleaner job if you have a dremmel tool, I just did this with a drill and silicon it after. this is my broken lid, so I don't actually use this one, the new one is cut cleaner, but you get the idea....

this is the hose. Its 5.75 per foot. you need about 1.5 feet incase you make a mistake, but you use about 1 foot.

this is the hose under the car. You attach a metal venting tube from Home depot to it.

Getto I know, but it works awesome. Put a K & N in there and your good to go.

I should point out that you use the stock box, cut a hole in the bottom, route the hose through the radiator and sub frame, to the bottom of the car and attach the tube with the large opening there. I sealed any gaps with silicon.

When I replaced my filter with a K & N, I found the stock filter was white, except where the hose met the filter it was brown. So I Know this works.
you cant tell its modded till you look under the car.

For that work better, the hole should have been the same size as the hose. Maybe you can duct tape the gaps or something.

If you do a home made Pettit type of intake kit, you can buy the RE Amemiya heat shield from jt-imports. Get some screw down clamps to, instead of those stock squeeze crap ones.

agent-

if you want to imitate the pettit kit, you only need ONE little filter. Just go and vent the BOV and the CRV and the only thing that needs a connection would be the air pump. Good luck. And yes, the kit is easy to mimick. The hardest part is making a replica of the heat shield. I can probally make a template for people that are interested. Then all you do is make an outline and cut your sheetmetal to spec.

RyanREX- What size pipes did you use? Do you have pn's for the filters?

RX7Elmo- a template would be awesome! Let me know if you can do that...

Thanks

i can easily take out my heat shield and just trace (1st grade flashback) But i have NO CLUE how to send this out to people?? A digital pic of it wont' help, nor could i scan something that big. ONly thing i could do is to simply do airmail.

I wont' be able to do this until this weekend, when i'm installing my FMIC. Please just PM me if you would want me to do this for you. I could do it to scale, but that makes it a tad more complicated for me to scale it down, and for someone to scale it back up to size. I'll figure it out.

Dude, I was not clear but in my post I said I used silicon to seal the opening. that box is not my actual lid I"m using, the side tabs cracked so I got a new one one now and its cut to size, this is just to give an idea.

Hmmm, maybe nows the time to bust out "Ice" intake....I have devised a system that redirects the Air Conditioning outlet directly into the intake for both turbos!

Sure I may be sweatin sticks of butter in the cockpit on a summer day, but my car thinks its a chilly winter morning everyday!

Constant 35 degree Turbine Inlet Temps cant be wrong!!!

Thanks for the help. Here is what I have in my mind to do. Build an intake about like RyanREX, then build an aluminum box surrounding it with a fresh air duct from the bumper directing cool air to the box. So if anyone's done something similar to this let me know.

Thanks
Chuck
