How good is the 944 turbo intercooler?
I am planning on switching out this stock rx7 intercooler and going ahead and seeing if i can find a 944 turbo intercooler. I am doing this because of my budget is kind of tight for purchasing a peterfarell intercooler, so i thought this would be the best bang for the buck by purchasing the 944 intercooler. Anybody have the 944 interooler in there car? i know its a pretty big intercooler, not to say that bigger is always better but probably anything is better than the stock intercooler.

its better than stock but still on the small side . Excellence did a write up on a 400 hp 944t and it had the stock intercooler but they were planning to get a bigger one in a short time.
I'd just get a used 3rd gen spec i/c

Not to be picky, but it is the 951 intercooler, there never was a 944 Turbo. Better know now, than offend some Porsche enthusiast. If you really want one, look on the Renn list. You can probably find a used one. IMO, I don't think you'd get much of a gain.

Never a 944 turbo
I was wondering about that 951 thing. My friend has a 944 turbo, he is a porsche enthusiast, and thats what he calls it. In fact he is switching the engine out with an LS1 V8 as we speak. The car says 944 and turbo. I have never seen one that says 951. I am talking about a 1986 or so model year.

fart on a friends head!!!
i believe there is a 944 turbo and i believe it might be the 944"S". . . i may be wrong i dunno. the 944 intercooler is definately better then stock. it has cast aluminim endtanks welded to it. and it is quite a bit larger than stock. it is probably as good as a medium smic. . . if not better. i am looking at mine right now. . . the one im trying to sell. . .wink wink!!!!!!! haha. pmed you, rzrx7tt!!!!

I always thought the 944 was too thick to put in the rx7. I always wondered about the older 930 intercoolers. They look box like and a nice fit. Dont really know enough about them though

why don't you guys find a 993 or 996 intercooler. They must be better and with a bit of luck you can go to a dealer junkyard and pick one up for a decent price out of a flood car or fire car.

You know, you COULD always try to have your own SMIC custom made. Cores are pretty cheap, and you might actually be able to have one made for a few hundred dollars depending on the size you want.

There is No 944 Turbo.... If a car say it, someone has done a rice boy thing and added badges. The 944 "S" is a N/A 944 w/ all the goodies except the turbo of a 951. But, enough... this is not the Renn list.......

Yo matwey, you are wrong dude. He didnt put the insignia on there. They are stock insignia. I will bet you anything. There is a 944s which is not turbo, 944s2 which I am not sure but I dont think is turbo, and 944 TURBO which even has turbo painted on the body on some of the models. Nice try.

Come to think of it, his car I dont think has 944 written on it. BUT it is a 944 body (except for some body flares and ground effects). PLUS everywhere I have just searched refers to it as a 944 turbo. It may have the name 951 specifically for the model but it is a turbocharged 944.

944 turbo
i own a 89 944 auto. it is stock, it sticks to the road like glue, i had it up to 140mph. i have nothing aganst rx7s. i like e'm. i used to have a prelude 4 wheel steer, almost totaled it doing 100mph. then i had an 87 mr2 toyota which was very fun but rusted out. so i got a porsche and joined the club. it's been fun but i have got to get a turbo because i rode in a 930 and that same guy has a 944 turbo also, and it's almost as fast. any way there is 944 turbos and 944s turbos 951 is acode name like 930 for 911 turbo,or 931 for a 924 turbo that's all. no one will look at you wierd or any thing if you call it a 944 turbo. say 951 if your to lazy to say all that other stuff. are'nt rotary engines expensive to repair? i found that parts for my 89 944 are about the same as my 87 toyota mr2.

Rotary Freak
To be a total pedant, think you will find the car referred to as a 951 in the US. In Italy and the rest of the civilised world universally known as 944 turbo.
So there
So there

racing is kick *** whatever you drive. if you like to do mods on cars a 944 can handle every bit of 200mph the car is so stable at high speeds. i drove my dads 89 vette and got a little freaked out at 105 because it felt like the back end was coming off the pavement at the slightest bumps. 944s have the very light engine up front and transmisson in rear so they're very well balanced. mine handles better than my 87 mr2 did and just as good as my dads 89 vette.i wanna sell my 89 944 2.7 liter 3-speed auto. $5500. any one interested?
