How to fill oil in your R-12 AC system for $5.00

I needed to fill my compressor with oil but didn't want to disconnect the lines nor pay $150 to get a profession shop to do it.

Solution:

It comes with 3/4 oz of mineral oil for R-12 (car) or R-22 (home), screw one end into the low side schrader valve, at the other end, use a 5/8 socket, ratchet it in and it forces oil into the low side.

Order from here:

Was your compressor making noise or something?

I've seen those at auto parts stores as well, BTW.

Can't you just buy a can of oil and add it the same way you would with refrigerant (connect to low pressure side and run the AC)? That's how I did it on my Beretta.

Red face

Can you buy R-12 anymore? Everyone is being forced to update to R-134a indefinitely, so nobody carries an R-12 recharge kit or anything...

You can still get R12 systems refilled, it's just extremely pricey. I don't think just anyone can buy R12 though.

It's fine to ship. You're not supposed to sell it to someone that's not certified to buy it. You can get a cert from several websites for $15.

duracool is a brand that is compatible with R-12 and 3 cans cost about 35 bucks or so.

Or if you let the person buying sign a statement saying he's buying the R12 for reselling then it's legal too.
