It's really not that hard. I also miss a sunroof and looked into getting one. You can buy the sheet metal top at the dealer. You will haev to cut your top off, you simply remove the rivets where the factory drilled them in. You do not touch the main frame itself. You then haev to tack weld the new top on adn then do the body work and paint.

The part from the dealer was about $400 for the sheet metal for the top.

I acutally saw it done once and it was very easy for an experienced body man.

Hope that helps.

Anthony

Don't forget the motor and switch need to be wired in.

I hear you lose headroom from that.

There is not just a hole cut into the roof - the sheet metal bends down at 90 deg angle and into the 'well'. Also, the frame for the sunroof/moonroof has to attach somewhere, and judging by the extra frame and glass 'roof I have, it attaches to the bottom side of the roof. (have not gotten around to removing the headliner and putting it in)

I understand about wanting to save money, but the only real correct way of doing it is to have a new roof welded in. All the custom work you would have to have done to adapt the sunroof to a non-sunroof car would easily add up to just buying and welding a new roof in the first place. I'm willing to wager that just cutting a hole in a roof will cause nothing but problems.

As for cutting the R1/2 roof off and welding a Touring/etc roof on, it's not as crazy as it seems. While not common everyday job, most body shops have done this before. Tony Yeh had to have a new one welded on when his hood latch broke open at speed, I believe.

BTW, I have spare sunroof frame/motor and panel for cheap if you need one.

It is a waste of money. Buy a Touring.

It can be done. First the SKIN on the roof has to be cut off and the Touring skin welded on. There are no rivets holding on the roof skin only spot welds. Buy it new because a used one will end up costing the same or more after a bodyshop spends all their time getting it ready to put on (fixing drilled out spot welds, dings and prepping for paint).

There are several "tabs" (for lack of a better word) that are welded onto the inside of the roof to hold the sunroof mechanism, you need to put those on your car too.

Parts list:
Roof skin (best to buy this new)
misc sheetmetal to hold sunroof assy (buy new or cut off donor car)
Sunroof assembly (easy to find used)
Headliner
Dome light with switch
Wire in power for sunroof

It would be really better to get a car with a sunroof IMHO.

Actually it'll be kinda like a touring with R1 spoiler and front lip......Different seats too, of course.

i think you'd actually gain headroom from a sunroof since people who always open their sunroofs like me would just leave that sunroof cover off.

That is only if you actually enjoy doing the gangster lean. It gives me a sore back after awhile.
