i'm not sure exactly where you are having problems, but just set the e-brake, and use a 14mm(?) socket to get them off. you'll have to release the e-brake, rotate the drive shaft, and re-set the e-brake for each bolt. mine were pretty tight, but came off without any drama.

oh yeah, TURN YOUR CAPS OFF!!

Yep do what ISUposs said to do. You have to set the e-brake(put it in gear if the tranny/motor is still in the car) so that the driveshaft stays put while you break the bolts. And don't forget there's a nut on the other side of the bolt.

Are you having a problem unbolting the bolts without the driveshaft turning or what exactly is the problem?

it is kind of a tight fit. you said that you already removed the engine and transmission, so is your driveshaft in the way because it is hanging down? are the bolts just really tight?

also, out of curiosity, if you already have the engine/transmission removed, why are you removing the driveshaft?

the shaft isn't in the way. the problem is i just can't seem to unbolt the bolts. they are on really tight. i am working in my garage. the car is jacked from the front and the back is on the ground to prevent the rear wheels from spinning. i also pull the e-brake. there is little room to work underneath there but thats not the big problem. i need to remove the shaft because i plan to move the car soon. so when push the car, the rear wheels will turn thus turning the shaft. that is the reason i want to remove it...

try using a wrench, if your having problems getting to it... its really not torqued on there that much, they should have lock washers on them if i remember correctly

I used a screw driver to brace it from turning and used a wrench. It came off pretty easily but then again I had it up on a lift so there was plenty of room to work.

Lift the back of the car up to get more room. Then put some kind of metal tube or another wrench over your wrench to get more torque.

If you are removing it so you can move the car.........how are you planning to move it to a shop to remove it???? Why don't you just support the DS w/ a cloth strap bolted to where one of the tranny tunnel crossbars go instead of removing it then?? Might add a little difficulty w/ the engine and tranny install later however......

BINGO! its all about leverage. hooking the open end to the closed end of a wrench can accomplish the same thing if there is no tube available.

Won't the differential sag forward and down when there is nothing holding it up? You can't reinstall the ppf if you took out the tranny so wouldn't this cause some sort of problems?

The nose of the Diff will hang down, but if the PPF is still attatched to the Diff then it will rest on the cross bars, so no problem there...

If you remove the PPF or cross bars then it will sag more, but the Diff mount bushings will eventuall stop the travel. I wouln't suggest leaving it like this with all the weight of the PPF hanging off the Diff bushings but YMMV.

The easiest way I've found to install PPFs is to bolt it to the Diff first, then push it up to align it to the gear box (with a floor jack or tranny jack supporting the gear box).

Eric.
