How do I remove the ball joint from the lower control arm?

I have the front lower control arm off the car but it still has the wheel stud assembly on it. The 21mm bolt just turns the ball joint when I try and remove it. Do I need a special tool? Any tips? Thanx!

go to your nearest auto place.. say.. Kragens or Autozone.. and pick up a ball joint remover. Its a fork ... just tap it... and you're done.

Guys, he is saying he can't get the nut off the ball joint because it is spinning when he tries to loosen it. A splitter ain't going to help.

As you know already you have to get the nut off before you can split the ball joint. The ball joint is tapered where it slides through the spindle and this is supposed to "stick" it in place so it won't turn. If yours is turning when you try to loosen it I would actually tighten the ball joint to get it to seat tightly inside the spindle. Then try backing the nut off and using a splitter to remove the joint.

pickle forks suck! They pretty much ruin the dust boots.

take the nut off and put it on upside down to protect the threads. Then get a long punch, drift, or something along those lines and a large hammer. A couple of good hits and mine popped right off.

EDIT: oops, I misread.

If you hit the side of the housing that the tapered stud goes into with a medium hammer it will also break free.
