How do i know when my clutch needs to be changed?
Hey guys,
well my FDs clutch has begun to be a little noisy when engaged (foot off the pedal). Its actually worse after a little bit of spirited driving when its nice and hot. Its sometimes a bit clangy but the sound disappears after i disengage the clutch (push the pedal in).
The gears change smoothly, although second sometimes gets a bit crunchy.
Im not really seeing any major slippage, but im not really sure what to look for.
Should i change it? Is the noise enough to warrant a change?

when you replaced clutch, did you also replace pilot bearing? If so,greased?Throwout bearing the same?If youre not noticing a slippage,IMO its not the clutch, but then again, its just my .02 cents.Good luck

alot of "race" clutch make noise, my 6 puck always makes noise, i dont worry about it until i start getting slipping in 3gear or above, the load is higher in those gears so if i slips a bit i konw its not grabbing as it is surpose to and starting to go out.

I dont know what the clutch is that the last owner installed, im assuming it that its still got the factory clutch in there, as the engine is just reaching 70,000kms on the clock.
Im really worried about cash at the moment, but maybe i should just change it with another oem clutch and bearings.
The sound has got worse lately after i drive, i cant hear it when im driving, but when the car is sitting quietly idling at home i can hear it.
I know that its probably the throw out bearing but because the car still shifts fine, i was wondering if it does need a new clutch or what.

chattering or high squeals at idle and then goes away when you press the clutch pedal, slippage in one or all gears can and most likely be your clutch...I would suggest just doing an tune up on it by replacing all the parts with oem parts or getting something a little bit more aggressive.
things to change:
1 pilot bearing
2 clutch
3 pressure plate
4 throw out bearing

The simple answers, if it doesn't hold power, you need a clutch. If it's making funny noises that it wasn't before, you need a clutch.
Don't be retarded and just replace a pilot bearing or t/o bearing. The car has 70 thousand kilos on it. Change the whole friggin thing or you will need to fix something else shortly down the road.

He said it isn't slipping.
It sounds like your trans input shaft bearing may be the culprit if it is noisy in neutral, pedal out and it goes away right after you push in the pedal. The noise would come from that area too, since it's right behind the clutch.
What kind of noise is it when the clutch pedal is out (clutch engaged)? Whirring?
Check the trans level recently?
