I drive about 45 miles one way to work - mostly highway. I have to fill up every 2-3 days. Please note that I don't pound it when I get on the freeway and I keep the speed @ 65 MPH.

Even in 5th gear and at about 2500 RPM I am still burning gas like crazy. Average fill up is anywhere from $35 - $50. the $50 fill up came after Katrina.

I love driving her, but when you consider the cost of gas and possible winter weather you have to think twice about driving that far each day, unless you live down south or out west.

Super77, the info you gave us isn't very helpful. Here's how to calculate your mileage:

1. Reset your trip-meter the next time you fill the tank (all the way, until the pump shuts off).
2. Drive the car for most of a tank, and refill the tank again. The miles you drove (150 miles) divided by the gallons it took to refill the tank (10 gallons) is your MPG (150/10 = 15mpg). Try to do it at the same gas station, because sometimes different pumps will let the tank fill to different levels before shutting off.

I know this thread is old, but this might be helpful to someone anyway: My car bone stock except for a downpipe. The best I've ever seen is 19-21mpg on 200+ mile road trips, travelling 80+ most of the time. Around town, I usually get 14-16mpg. On an autocross day or brisk mountain trip, I've seen as little as 10-12mpg.

With all this talk about emancipating your FD for better MPG, no one has mentioned big trick for better MPG. Put on a set of narrow steelies with some LRR tires. Probably good for at least 10-15% better highway MPG.

Also, MPG numbers are alot like track times, the most important factor is the driver.

30 mpg in a FD .

1) you could have it towed.

2) push it

3) or have this guy drive it

I used to drive 45 miles each way, but putting that kind of mileage on my FD was out of the question, too rare and nice of a car to waste on that kind of mileage. I ended up buying an 03 GTI which was fast, fun, well appointed and got 30MPG on the highway. Great car all around but once we moved our business closer I got rid of it as I did not want any payments again and it is just not that unique of a car. I now just share the miles between my Jeep & my RX-7. I know the feeling of a long drive, but man that kind of mileage is difficult to put on a rare car like the RX-7. Sharing the miles between cars is probably the best solution, I have never asked for gas mileage out my RX-7, nor the Jeep for that matter...15MPG ouch...but hey you only live once! Good luck

Take drugs and beleive that the mileage is higher. I have had my Touring since 93 and the best I got on Interstate was 19 mpg. It runs rich!

Selling your honda and driving the FD full-time? That's a damn retarded idea. You won't get 30 mpg in "more fun to drive" mode - so forget about it.

The EPA is revising fuel consumption testing to more accurately reflect today's higher speeds and use of accessories like A/C and stuff. Most cars' ratings are far from accuate.

RX8s actually get fairly bad mileage. Most people over on rx8club.com can't go more than 200 miles without filling up. They're more pissed off at the range than they are at the 12 mpg they sometimes get.

I count myself lucky to occasionally get 19mpg. Usually it's around 17...but even that ain't bad with oversized injectors and a safe/rich tune.

Oh and I don't think getting a water injection kit to run 87 is a good idea...you do know that there are other things beside detonation to worry about w/ unclean fuels, right? Plus, unless you're a MASTER tuner, I dunno how you're gonna tune for WI. Steve Kahn, one of the BEST tuners, doesn't tune for WI cuz he knows how dangerous it is to do that. WI is used a a precaution against detonation, that's all.

I got 12.5mpg on ALL highway miles coming back from Miami to VA... Wargasm, that 21mpg wasn't just driving, was it? There was tuning involved, right??

As for me...I def. beat you in the record low. I actually got 5 mpg (average) once, when I filled up one night, when out joyriding (lots and LOTS of boosting) for a few hours, and had to fill up exactly 24 hours and 100 miles later...I kid you not (it coulda been 110 or 120 miles, TOPS)
Volvo has done extensive testing with water injection as it pertains to fuel consumption, emissions, and other misc. items. From what I remember ready, it would run better on 87 with WI than 91 without. Power was better, and fuel consumption was up 5 to 15%.

Simple solution, buy a civic, swap engines, 30+ in the FD, 15 in the civic.

I'll have some results on the NA S5 engine in my vert after it breaks in from my rebuild. I think mine is capable of getting their with the experiment that I did. My around town mileage has increased substantially. I'll keep you guys posted. Oh and before anyone says, "well your engine is NA while the Fd is turbo charged", it doesn't matter because both engines are in a vacuum state while cruising on the highway. So they both are NA at the time. Plus my vert is heavier than the Fd.

I think a lot of people forget that milage can suffer quite a bit due to elevation and air cleaniness. Cleaner more oxygenated air will generally come up with much better milage results.

I have been breaking in my rebuild for the last month so I've been carefully monitoring everything, including fuel economy. I've been slowly increasing the boost and the effect on fuel economy is obvious.

miles gallons mpg
280 14.74 19.00 least boost
298 17.55 16.98
269 16.52 16.28
247 17.44 14.16 most boost

I just went 334.7 miles on 18.477 gallons last tank. 18.11 MPG. My trip back and forth to work is 11 miles or so...2/3rd of it at 46-54 mph and the other 1/3rd at roughly 30 mph average. I did like 60-70 miles of straight city driving too. I think I might have done a full 2nd & 3rd gear pull 7 or 8 times during that tank. Not too shabby. I tuned the car with a wideband to idle at 14.7 and cruise at about 15.0-15.1.

Trevor, those 7-8 hard pulls probably took it from 23-24 down to 18. :P

Yeah...but I gotta stretch its legs occasionally!

I went thru another full tank and tracked it. I think I did about 40 miles of highway (64-74 mph) during that one and only managed 17.97 mpg. Still damn good though.

I just got an FD and have only went through 1 tank, getting 17.2 mpg I have exhaust no cats and intake with no ecu. With a tuned ECU I could probably get 20, but that isn't what this car is for. I have also owned a 1991 Honda Civic CRX HF which on a 300mile roadtrip I pulled 45mpg running only on 3 cylinders half of the way. So Could luck, Probably only way to do it would be to start with a block and fix all of the problems with leaking unburned fuel out of the exhaust, the 13b are bad about that.
