how can i get 30mpg or higher with an fd
how can i get 30mpg or higher with an fd
im seriously thinking about selling my daily driver honda and just sticking with the fd...it's just so much more fun to drive and makes waking up to go to work tolerable. i commute 40 miles each way on the freeway and want to know what i can do to save gas. i already ordered a water injection kit which allows the use of 87 octane at stock boost levels. now i want to maximize my mpg. i've done all the standard tuneup stuff (plugs, filters, etc) and now i want to see what i can add or modify to get more miles per gallon. i don't care about performance on the freeway...im just doing a steady 65mph for about 40 miles. lets all share because im sure there are some guys out there that don't drive their fd as much as they'd like to because of high gas consumption and high gas prices.
Ok, the best way to do this is to take your car up 30 miles in a plane with a gallon of gas, and drive it out the back revving it like crazy until u hit the ground. Whaaa Laaaa 30mpg.
Now all kidding aside, stay off the boost as much as possible, and if I hadn't been at work and studdying for the past 26 hours I would think and type more but I'm shot. I'll chime in more tomorrow.

I am not sure you'll ever get 30 mpg unless you're on a very long trip and you drive very gently.
My record high is 21 in my FD and maybe close to 25 in my FC. My record low is 8 in the FD and 10 in the FC.

You cannot get 30 mpg in an FD. The best you could ever hope for would be around 25, and that would be all freeway with no acceleration. You didn't buy the FD because it gets good mileage, and it never will.
Keeping your foot out of the throttle is all you can do ............ and most of us can't even do that

Oh and I don't think getting a water injection kit to run 87 is a good idea...you do know that there are other things beside detonation to worry about w/ unclean fuels, right? Plus, unless you're a MASTER tuner, I dunno how you're gonna tune for WI. Steve Kahn, one of the BEST tuners, doesn't tune for WI cuz he knows how dangerous it is to do that. WI is used a a precaution against detonation, that's all.

As for me...I def. beat you in the record low. I actually got 5 mpg (average) once, when I filled up one night, when out joyriding (lots and LOTS of boosting) for a few hours, and had to fill up exactly 24 hours and 100 miles later...I kid you not (it coulda been 110 or 120 miles, TOPS)

Then he should get an insight. If he's not going for looks also..

I bet those drivers don't even know what a gas station looks like...

The EPA mileage stated for the 93-95's was 17 city / 25 highway. I usually see 14-17mpg, my car is basically stock. Best mileage ever was 19mpg on a long freeway trip, 100 miles there 100 miles back, no stops except for the destination.
Buy an RX-8 and drive it like a grandma, that's probably the best mileage you'll ever see out of a rotary. City Mileage: 18 mpg Hwy Mileage: 24 mpg according to edmunds.com

that's EPA claimed mileage, using their tests. Look it up to be sure, but I've heard it's 55mph constant speed for the highway portion, and something equally easy for the city portion.
It's probably safe to assume that most companies send a "ringer" for the test: a car hand-built and tuned to the optimum factory specs for the test.
You should see a slight improvement in mpg by inflating the tires to higher pressure, try that it's cheap.
