Hood Struts

Anyone know what struts to buy to put on the hood? So you can get rid of the prop rod.

I've read that the TEIN version don't support carbon fiber hoods. So if you ever decide to go carbon, you're **** out of luck, I say get the Rotary Extreme version.

I have a VIS carbon fiber hood and they support it perfectly fine.... It actually goes up on its own!

I have the RE kit here waiting to be put on. Can anyone chime in on how much of a pain install is? There are no directions or pictures. I have an idea where they go, but my concern is the PITA of aligning the hood when done.

Real easy to install. Either gently do one side at a time or use a marker on the brackets to note the positions before you loosen anything.

10 minute job, including one beer (Blackened Voodoo).

Fair enough, but Crispy has a vented hood. I believe that was the issue there. The original poster and Amraam4 never mentioned an aftermarket hood and were concerned about how difficult an install the struts are--hence my previous post.

I have the Tein hood shocks and I had to modify the inner fender lip where the fenders bolt up so that the shocks would clear. I had to notch it and flatten it down some so that the carbon scoot hood would fit flush.

so i'm guessing since you guys are modding the hood it's because you work under it often. i work in a shop and i've seen those things slam down unexpectedly even after staying up all day long... put your hand in the wrong place and bye bye finger. i just don't understand their appeal, i mean no one even sees them.

I don't understand it either. I would think that a prop rod weighs less than 2 hood struts, so ther is no weight savings. A prop rod won't wear out. Struts will.

Seems like the only reason to get hood struts would be to go with your useless turbo timer!!!

I had my hood up for 5 months during the winter since I had the battery plugged on to a battery minder and no problems here...Chuck uses quality pieces..

As far as what is the point to it, yes it is not a performance mod but more of a covenience mod....If you dont like it dont buy it..simple as that....

Not all of us are cheap bastards...lol....

I can't get my asp large IC duct to fit right so the hood prop doesn't fit. I've only had em in for a month and it sure is convenient. And i use my TT all the time! Just today I used it to keep the car running while I ran in dunkin donuts for some coffee.

random TT note: in a recent car and drive article contributed to by cam@pettit a TT was recommended as a reliability thing. if i had it to do again i'd have saved my money...and bought hood dampers sooner

Same here... Just had to flatten one section of the driver side fender for the dampers to clear... Fits flush now with my CF hood

I'm running 3" intercooler piping with large front mount so my stock hood prop wouldn't work. Plus the Tein hood dampers match my Tein coilovers. :-)

I find it hard to believe that this is common. On which cars does this happen? Many cars come with these stock (e.g, BMWs, Porsches) and when they fail they generally slowly fail to support the hood properly. I think there would be lots of liability lawsuits if this were a common failure mode.

I have struts on my FD (and they come stock on two other cars that I own) and they are excellent. Removing the stock bar allowed me to move my intercooler up a little for more radiator clearance (and some ICs will not work at all with the stock bar). Also, access is easier to certain engine components because the bar is not in the way.

that's great, but the fact is they do fail and when they do it's not a slow controlled thing... they slam down. that they do otherwise is BS. have you ever seen one gently let the hood down?

it doesn't have to be common to be true and dangerous. it just happened to me a week or so ago with a 3 series convertible. i've also been warned about it by people who have worked on cars for over 20 years. you open enough strutted hoods and one is going to fall... especially with air tools vibrating things or a lift going up. detents wear out, fluids leak, simple as that.

take it or leave it bro, they're your appendages.

I bought mine for structure purposes so my CF doesn't warp if it's up on the hood prop for too long. I know several people who have left their CF hoods propped with the the stock bar and it warped their hood because it supports one side more than the other... When the hood is up it's only up for maintenance and modding so it doesn't stay up long enough for me to worry about it. Plus I wouldn't expect them to both fail at the same time. One holds the hood just fine.
