Hood Prop Options.

Ok, this may be a totally ghey thought but I saw on a friends miata he used some sort of a gas shock to keep the hood open. No hood rod needed...

Is there anything like that for the FD?

I don't have a pic but to give you an idea of what it looked like. Think of how our rear hatch stays open with those gas shocks...kinda like that.

Make your own mounts and brackets for the gas shocks
for your car in the engine bay.

Take a look at a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. It has two gas struts to keep the hood up and it looks like it's thin enough to work for our cars.

My M2 Large causes me to remove the hood prop so I'm thinking of doing this in the next few months. If I ever get it done, I'll post a picture. In the mean time, why don't you guys try it out?

I'm moving at the end of the month so I doubt I can get to it within the next month or so but the tiburon thing is a good idea.

Also, our hood is a lot lighter than most cars, so a you could use a real small strut.

it would be a great thing if successfully done.

Obviously, those struts are under the most pressure when the hood is closed and I can imagine that some of them would be strong enough to try to bend the hood while it is closed. Keep that in mind.

True, but those things would be a biatch to work on if you are in the hood constantly.

It would actually provide more room for working from the sides, since it opens straight up. But work in the front would be harder without removing it.

I've seen some hood inverter kits, but they look cheaply made for rice cars...I'd really like to do it...I think it would look great when you want to open the hood.

It could be done fairly easily, but would require experimenting to get the right amount of lift, the right reach, custom made brackets, yadda yadda, not to mention adding weight ,complexity and yet another failure prone part(s). I think it would take two gas springs to make it happen so that you wouldn't tweak the hood.

It would be pretty cool though to pop the hood, rear hatch, gas tank filler door and sunroof (on a touring of course) and have them open all open simultaneously when you pull in for gas....

I smell an awesome ghetto project.

corvette hoods open forward. my buick hood opens forward. i don't think it's that big of a deal.
