Hood Insulation Options?

The hood blanket (insulation) is pretty shot, coming apart and or loose in several places.

Ray can get new ones, but he says the problem is shipping. For some reason over $100 due to how it has to be boxed.

Any other good options?
We want to keep something there to protect the paint and help with the noise level.

Wondering if any other model would fit or some other product?

Thanks

Search "hood insulation" and there are a lot of different threads about replacing it with different material. Some of them have pics and part numbers of the material they used. When it's time for me to get one I'm going back with the factory Mazda insulation.

Just remove it. Your hood will transfer heat out of the engine bay better without it and according to a post I read by howard coleman there are no ill effects to the paint from not having it there.

the insulation is merely a safety option when there is an engine fire.... the plastic SHOULD melt, and the insulation will fall onto the motor, hopefully smothering it out.... but in most cases if the fire gets hot enough to melt the plastic tabs ALL the way onto the hood..... then the damage has already been done

I planned on going with something like this:

http://www.secondskinaudio.com/viewp...id_product=355

$80.00 for six square feet and that should do the hood easily.

Is there any point to having the insulation other than fire control? Is the car louder, more airflow, any benefits to just taking off a perfectly good piece?

I haven't had hood insulation for about 7 years with a single turbo. Done many track events, drag raced it. Don't worry about it.

I know Ray does give a good discount. But he is basically just a Mazda dealership. Your local Mazda dealer can order one in. $206.07 is Mazda list. If you have a cute Wife/GF send them in alone and see if they cannot get a discount. I usually throw an extra 10-20% off if a cutie seems nice enough and asks if I can do anything on the price.
