at any rate it will be at least 2 yrs+ before we hear anything, and if your gonna get an FD better start shopping soon cause they aren't getting any younger

I'm in the same boat. I want another FD, but I would like an RX-8, but then a 4th Gen RX-7 would be oh so nice. So I'm thinking I'm going to sell my TL-S, I sold my FD for (baby reasons) get an RX-8,(baby can fit in there) and hopefully by the time the new RX-7 comes out I'll have most of the RX-8 paid off, and grab one of those too. Very unlikely but I can hope.

The only problem with a 4th gen is that it will cost so much that I wouldn't want to mess with it too much. The beauty of a 3rd gen is that I can buy bolt-ons and make it as fast as a car that is 3 or 4 times as expensive as the original 3rd gen price.....NICE.

I was thinking about it the other day....if I had a Lamboghini would I work on it? Well, other than it probably would be very expensive to work on, I would be worried about changing it from stock (if it needed that..hehehe) and dropping its value.

We are all taking a Japanese sports car and doing the really American thing to them: modifying and adding muscle!

The funny thing with the FD is it'll probably take u about $30k to get it running the way you want it. So even if the 4Gen was out...it just comes down to which u like better

AGREED, last week I made a list of what I want/need to do to my car and the total bill came out to 24k. That's a lot of money to dump into an 8 year old car. If instead I sold my FD for ~15 and added that to the 24 I would have 39 to spend on a new/newer car

I also think it is important to keep in mind that if you buy a stock(not necessarily new) car for 39k and resell it immediately it will be worth roughly what you paid for it. On the other hand if you drop 24 into an FD you will probably still have a difficult time selling it for more than 25k.

In the end I think there is a ceiling on the amount of money you can realize from selling a modified car. I haven't put any real thought into this, but I'm guessing that once the cost of modifications exceeds the book value of the car your bad investment becomes a really bad investment

You know all those tricked out Mustangs and GTO's...yeah the classic cars of the 60's? What do you think those are getting? My prediction...the FD will be a classic. And I also think that the non-stock FD's with bolt ons will be just as popular as the completely stock chalk mark cars. There are very few cars like that out there....so take care of it.

We don't even know if the 4th gen will be here. Mazda is probably working on it but they may not sell it here if the market isn't strong enough. If the new Z is around $30k and the 4th gen is $40k, I don't think the 4th gen will fare well. With Miata selling over $23k now, I don't know if there really is a market for a 4th gen selling around $30k.

Mazda is one of the only car companies that does not share its chasis and engine across all models. Most car makers today make 2-3 engines and chasis across 7-8 models of cars. This cuts down on R&D and outsourcing cost. Mazda is moving in that direction when they share the RX8 chasis with Miata and perhaps the 4th gen but they are still far from it. This makes cars expensive so don't expect a 4th gen to be cheap.

Get a nice 3rd gen before they all disappear. You can always get a 4th gen when and if they come out.

man i am telling you: the 3rd generation rx7 is one of the most exotic looking cars ever built. not just that, but once you drive them, you dont want to drive another car. they are addictive. big time!!!!

get a 3rd. they will definitely be a classic collectible a few years from now.

I totally agree with the concensus. Get a 3rd gen and then buy a 4th gen when/if they are released. And if you can and want to, but an rx-8 and help contribute to the rotary spirit and we will all that much closer to expecting the 4th gen. Plus I wouldn't jump on it yet since we have no idea what it looks like. So 3rd gen, and then sel it if you want 4th.

4 gen is still on designer's table. It's not in produstion yet. There may not even a working concept car yet.

99 spec still a FD, how can it be a 4 gen? 99 spec is FD series 5(3 gen)
