High Oil Pressure?

I just got my 93 R1 back after having had lots of work done to it. The engine was replaced with a Mazda reman and has done about 1000 miles now. Everything has been running and working perfectly. Last night, driving the car home from work, I noticed that the oil pressure on the gauge was running a good deal higher than it had previously. Cruising along in 3rd or 4th gear at 3k rpm or so, the gauge was reading 90-100 lbs. I stopped and checked the stick and the oil level and color looked fine. Is this a problem?

You might check/clean the oil pressure sending unit. It tends to get dirty and cause some interesting readings.

To be honest, I'm not sure. The mechanic I take my FD to just replaced mine about 4 months ago. I'm sure someone will pop in here with some help or you can browse the shop manual:

What weight oil are you using? Was it pinned at 90-100 the whole way home and how far did you drive it?

It has 10W/40 and was changed about 500-600 miles ago. It would hover around 90lbs cruising at 3000-3500 rpm. At idle it would drop down to 40lbs or so. I have driven it 10-15 miles like this.

As far as I know thats normal.. mine does that all the time...
the Fd is designed to have high pressure so it keeps the turbos and internals well oiled all the time!

Exclamation

Shouldn't be 90-100lbs at 3000-3500rpm's though...

twocycler, you said the oil was changed recently. Did you change the oil or did you take it somewhere? If they don't have a Mazda oil filter, other filters can cause the pressure to read higher since I don't think they have a bypass valve.

Just as important as the anti-drainback valve is the bypass valve which pops open if oil pressure suddenly skyrockets due to a oil pickup screen clog or other internal blockage, or even overfilling the crankcase. It allows unfiltered oil to recirculate until oil pressure is reduced back to normal, at which time it shuts and allows normal filtering. It's a critical component to prevent blowing oil seals and gaskets so I'd stay with the OEM and product-tested Mazda one. It's 5-7-buck cheap insurance, and be sure to read the OEM fine print on any aftermarket warranty you may have.
I'm not sure if that's what you are referring to?
