Hi-FLow Cats

Has anyone done any flow rate comparisons between hi-flow cats. Especially the N-Tech, which claims it flows 96% of the flow of a midpipe and the Bonez/Rotary Performance (same as a Random Technology?) hi-flow cat. Any opinions are welcome on the characteristics of both. Would a resonated midpipe be quieter than a hi-flow cat, but with better flow characteristics. Basically want to quiet down while losing as little power as possible. Thanks.

I would love an answer to this as I debate midpipe or Hi Flow!

I have the n-tech and it is not all that quite with the apexi n1 on there but it is quiter than with a midpipe...I tried. About def from that on..hehehe. It flows really well, I have not had a problem with it and it has provided a nice increase in power.

i have the n-tech hi-flow cat.

i think it flows really well ( got louder.) and passed Cali. smog test w/ flying colors.

for its price, id say go for it unless u want to go w/ midpipe.

Exclamation

From what I've read (granted it's pretty much all sales stuff), the N-Tech flows the best of any Hi-Flo cat, but the Bonez Hi-Flo lasts the longest. Take it with a gain of salt because I've never seen any tests to back up any of those sales pitches.

However, there was a dyno chart posted on the web comparing a hi-flo cat to a midpipe some time ago. The midpipe showed a substantial gain over the hi-flo at high RPMs.

If you are trying to make your car as fast as possible, then there is no other way but a midpipe. If you just want to fast but not as loud or stinky, the hi-flo will be a nice fit.

Never seen a comparison

But Bonez (Japanese)is not the same company as Random Technology (USA). I've use the RT on my Honda and it passed smog easily, although I did burn one up in a week with a bad distributor. Tri-Point also sells one but I have a feeling that it's Bonez and their sway bar is M2, but have no way of proving it.

Maybe you shoulda made this a poll

There is a big price difference ($160) between N-Tech & Bonez. N-Tech says you need slight modification to connect the air pump. Maybe the guys that own one(N-Tech)can coment on that.

All 3 say they are bolt-on replacements. Here is RT's dyno (below)with a 300ZX-TT

Oh, sorry...

(Sorry) Worded like you did Mahjik. I'd be curious to what everyone else chose. People are prolly sick of polls but if you only leave it up for a week instead of three months, it's not that bad.

Maybe they should add a poll section to move old poll threads to?

Well, for me the choice was pretty obvious to go with the Hi-Flo instead of the midpipe.

1. Emissions testing. I don't have the resources to switch out a cat and midpipe at will right now.

2. Midpipe smell. My wife is not going to want to smell like exhaust all the time, and she really enjoys riding (notice I said riding, not driving ) in the FD. Plus, I don't want to smell like exhaust either.

3. Loudness. Midpipes are loud. The FD attracts enough unwanted attention (police, thieves, etc). I didn't want to advertise anymore.

Since I don't drag race my car, I don't miss the added performance that a midpipe would give me.

It seems much more likely to get boost creep and spike with a midpipe than with a hi-flow even with an ecu. It just depends on what you want and what sacrifices you are willing to take.

I spoke with someone on that exact topic since I have been looking at buying the N-tech cat. The answer I got was that the cat is shipped out with a flange, if you want to hook up the smog pump you need to get the flange welded on and torch a hole.. seems like something real easy to get done at an exhaust shop, or your buddy's garage with his welding equipment.

The Tripoint and M2 bars are not the same. They are similar in design, but different parts.
