Help. wont go into 5th nor reverse.

I was doing some "spirited" driving last night and for some reason my car didn't go into 5th gear. It wouldnt go into any other gear so pulled to the side of road. I attempted it once more and it worked fine.

My car is in my driveway right now because I discovered that it wont go into reverse. I tested my car and it shifts into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear but it wont go into 5th either.

Im waiting for my dad to get home from work so he can help but I wanted to see if anyone out there could help me with this too.

thanks, ricardo

Did you notice any difficulty going into 5th before? Mine started to grind a bit when shifting into 5th a few days after installing a B&M last thursday.
I know our trannys are know for having a weak 5th gear synchro. My guess is you wrecked yours. If you didnt have any other gears id suggest checking the cm/slave cyl. for failure but since you got 1-4 its gotta be the synchro.
As for Reverse, try shifting into 2nd and then reverse...sometimes that helps it go in.

the 5th/reverse shift fork is probably broken inside the trans. you can have a trans. shop look at it to verify this but in the end it will be cheaper to get one yourself and have someone put it in.

The 5/R shift fork, reverse idler, 5th gear synchro, etc are all in the same part of the housing, isolated from the other gears. It's possible that two things happened: the 5/R fork or slider broke or is jammed, or something has the shift selector from engaging the 5/R selector. Broken 5th synchros apparently do that at times.

You'll have to follow the instructions of a 5th synchro replacement to get in deep enough to really figure it out. Certainly you want a new 5th synchro on hand, a new roll pin for the fork, new countershaft locknut, and maybe a new fork and 5/R clutch sleeve. The proper amount of 'snick' in moving the 5/R shift fork and slider requires a good firm grip on the fork to move it, or a precise light tap with a hammer.

FWIW, I have a spare 5/R fork in the garage with very minimal wear. I only replaced it because I had already bought all new forks - turns out they rarely need replaced. PM me if you want it.

Dave

Im guessing you missed 3rd gear? Most on here have done it. Get the car on a hill roll back slowly and put the car in reverse it will take a couple of attempts but should go in no problem. Also you can put it in 3rd gear and pull the shifter prett hard towards you(driver seat) and then try to put it in gear. May take a couple mins but dont get frustrated. Just hope the 5th gear syncro isnt shot. Most likely you will need a 5th gear syncro.

Wow! What's going on in the gearbox that would get jammed and be unjammed with this technique, but nothing ends up damaged?

You bend the shift fork when missing 3rd and what I posted helps you straighten it back out. You can usually get it back in gear within a couple mins however the 5th gear syncro is usally toast after this. It should shift into all gears just like it did before but will usually start to see the early symptons of the 5th gear syncro failure.

Ok, I get it - that's a 'how to get the car home' trick

Well the car will drive and shift just like it did before you missed 3rd gear with the exception of the 5th gear grind. A lot of people drive with the 5th gear grind for years. Personally it would drive me crazy but some seem not to mind it too bad.

That's what I was thinking.................broke fork, bent at the very least.
