i think you should have someone press the hood down while you are pulling on the lever. However, if nothing helps than the wire might be broken, i can't help you then, sorry.

If you can reach thru the driver side wheel liner you can grab hold of the cable and tug it to open the hood.( That is only if the cable is still connected up at the latch) Otherwise you could go at it from the underside.( Remove bellypan and get to it that way.)Hope this helps some. I have the same problem with a 93 R1 rite now. Cable is on order.

The cable on mine snapped right at the handle, It was still there so I could pull the handle up, reach the cable, and pull it to release the hood.
I got a new release handle from Mazda reattached it, and its been fine ever since.

It happened to me last year.
follow Mahjik's link or do a search for hood release under my user name. Lot's of bad advice out there, stick with the screwdriver/mousepad/coat hanger-wire technique.
Also, it actually took me longer to rig a wire to serve as a temporary latch release than it took me to open the hood....
Also, don't forget to disarm your car alarm before you try to do this...if you don't, it can be a bit startling...

Call me gramps!
If it still makes the "click" sound, then try one of two things...
1. For me, my hood release line is worn, so I have to push down on the hood (right where the latch is, with some pressure) before pulling the release cable.
2. Have someone push down on the hood with a moderate amount of force, while you pull the hood release latch.
Try those before you use the mousepad trick or go under the car.

the ways i succeed is to use a flashlight like wat rynberg have said and look for that green plastic piece (or the release cable) near the U-bolts?
once you can see the release cable, use something thin that can go thru in between the hood and the bumper, to catch the cable and pull it to open...
its freaky to know how easy it is to open an fd3s hood!!!
