I know exactly why you need a new engine.

I just blew my apex seal and trashed the engine. It was not unexpected. My Mazda mechanic has been telling me for over a year that I would need a new engine soon. The 3rd gen rotary is only good for about 70,000 miles anyway.

So, you've got a few choices. Sell the rolling chassis for whatever you can or get a new engine. A rotary rebuild should cost around $10,000 (from a specialty RX-7 shop) or an LS1 conversion (www.hinsonsupercars.com) for about $14,500. Just dependent on how much you love your car! Good luck.

Where are you getting $10,000 from a specialty RX7 shop?! It's only around $3800 for a Mazda Reman! It doesn't even cost that much to have one BUILT and installed! At least based on my research since I am preparing to do a swap soon cuz my engine is going... You could try Pineapple Racing in OR or search like I did for rotary specialists cuz there are a couple places up in Canada, WA, and lots of other places as well... Check the NW forum as well for more input from the local guys... You might get some more local recommendations if that's what you're looking for

You will need an engine for an auto for sure. The rear irons are not interchangeable. A manual will not work.

I got a line on a low mileage one but I am away on travel. PM me if you are interested...

I don't take kisses...only cash...

whoa!! no offense, but if you pay 10k for a new engine installed, youve lost your mind!!!! furthermore, many people have had their engines last a lot longer than 70k. Myself included. Its all about the maintenance, and if/how you modify the car. rickylil and YGTBSM: do yourselves a favor and read the FAQ and search the forum. I might also suggest avoiding the mazda dealer altogether. A good rotary shop is your best bet... again, search the forums for the list of rotary shops in your area.

good luck!!

it adds up fast

most people don't just swap the engine, they upgrade many other items as well (and they are smart to do so)

Yes it adds up quickly, but if the number approaches $10k something is wrong. Even in the overpriced SF Bay Area, R&R labour plus reman is about $5k. The only way to reach $10k would be by going to a Mazda dealer.

Or as he was saying by making other upgrades, but that would have to include BIG single and fuel system... On my budget I'm right around $10k and that is for NEW built raceport 13b, HUGE single, and upgraded fuel system!

it can easily reach $7-8k

more often than not, the turbos are damaged when an engine lets go, so, lets say you go with '99s or stage 3 BNRs, engine rebuild, new clutch, new wiring harness, new fuel lines and other fuel upgrades....all pretty commonplace, and that's assuming you already have the basics, like an upgraded IC and radiator....maybe the trans could also use freshening up (new hub, shift fork, 5th gear synchro, etc)...how about the bushings and engine mounts?

it all adds up....quick

But if you already have those things like the ECU, IC, bolt ons, etc it doesn't add up AS fast! And a lot of people who lose their engines already have a lot of that.... Depending on the condition of those things like turbos and whatnot you can still easily stay below $10k... Like I said my budget is right about there and that's for upgrading everything I don't already have, including my tranny, goiong single, and upgrading the fuel system, as well as doing a ported motor that can withstand MASSIVE boost numbers! It's all in where you go and who you use! Obviously it wouldn't be uncommon for someone to reach close to those numbers doing a full build, but for just the engine it should be about $5k IMO based upon my personal research in the engine replacement dept...

He might be quoting what a "NEW" unused engine would cost (since the original posted did say "New"). Mazdatrix will build an engine of "all new" parts, but the engine itself will run about $8000.

My mechanic says I have lost the compression. Also where do I even shop for engines. I have seen used ones on ebay for 2000? Someone steer me correct.

I feel so much dumber after reading a couple of the replies to this thread.

Just read the FAQ. It has many links to many different vendors that will sell you a new/rebuilt engine.

Those were "UNUNSED" engines with unknown shelf lives. Mazdatrix will build a brand new engine to spec for you. Here's their price:

What the heck are you guys smoking? I can usually build a motor for under 2 grand, usually install it and a few basic mods for under 3.
