Heater and ac filters?

I change my dash harness so I have take out all the heater and ac unit behind the dash.
Inside the heater and ac unit there are 5 air filters. This filters after all these year are very dirty and some of them are damaged.
Have anyone change this filters?
Mazda sell all the unit not the filters separately.

I think they are flappers for adjusting air flows.

But if they are filter like, couldn't they possibly start giving off oders from things sticking to them since the OP said they were filthy?

Those are blender doors. These cars don't have cabin air filters. The only thing there are some foam seals to seal the ducting. The same thing can be accomplished with some properly sized foam weatherstripping.

5 filters? HA! Even the Germans don't go in for that kind of engineering overkill.

But our cars were made by Japanese, they designed the rats nest afterall, who do you think they are! Overkill is their middle name.

The HVAC module is a dark, moist environment, perfect for growing microorganisms. You don't need to have any sort of filter-like material present for growth to occur.

You can spray lysol or similar aerosolized disinfectants into the fresh air intake with the fan on HIGH and Recirc. OFF to try to kill what's growing in there and causing the smell, or you can try to locate one of the special purpose expanding foam products specifically designed to sanitize auto HVAC modules.

Are you being serious? My comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

Well, if I'm to take you seriously I would say you no doubt know that Mazda subsequently modified the rats nest to a simpler design.

The German over-engineering stereotype is a running joke in the car world. The Japanese are following their lead to some extent, but still aren't as bad. Ever driven a BMW with I-Drive? I rest my case.
