heard a pop while driving

It was the first nice day in a long time so I decided to take out my car. Every thing was going great until I decided to get on it a bit. Then everything went wrong. I heard a pop, my heart stopped until I realized that amount of smoke coming from all around the car. I popped the hood and noticed that I no longer had an oil filter. The weird thing is the respeed pedestal broke. My question is how could this happen? Here are some pictures of the oil filter and pedestal.

How could it happen? Easy - they didn't design the part right. The threaded shaft the oil filter screws onto either didn't have enough material holding it to the base and it was twisted when the oil filter was tightened and eventually failed, or it's a two-piece assembly and whatever retained it failed.

I would contact RE Speed and see if you can send them the failed pedastal so they can learn from the failure.

Based on what I've seen Billy over at RE Speed is a standup guy, I'm sure he'll handle the situation.

I'm assuming you shut the car right down and the motor is fine?

crazy....

the machined area that failed looks far too thin, definitely send it to them so they can analyze and refine their machining process so it doesn't happen to anyone else. they might even consider a recall or ship out new ones in liu of eating motors or having a pissed off community on their hands if others fail. an oil filter pedestal is not something you can skimp on or be lax when designing..

They did recall the original batch to fix this problem.

Brian, did you ever send yours back for an updated pedestal? When did you buy it? Did you buy it from ReSpeed or did you pick one up from someone who decided not to use theirs?

You must have been on the original group by for them? I contemplated sending my back but when I saw the failures I went ahead and pulled it.

Talk with Billy at ReSpeed. I'm sure he'll help you out.

This is (unfortunately) a known problem.
