Have problems with B&M install..

Hello. I am currently installing a B&M short throw shifter and am having problems with separating the stock shifter with the car. I have taken out all four bolts on the edges of the stock shifter and have been trying to pry it out. The shifter has not budged at all. The shifter seems to have some sort of red silicone looking substance in between the shifter and the part it is bolted onto. It can be seen along the boundaries of the shifter and inside the holes. The tranny has been rebuilt once before by the previous owner i believe. Also, I am new to the forums. However, I have been reading threads from here ever since I've owned an FC, and I find posts from you fellow rotar lovers very informative. I hope to have my FD as nice as many FD owners on this forum. Much thanks for your efforts in helping get through this task.

Mikey Magsalin

the red is seen inside the holes and along the sides. I scraped most of the red on the sides off in an attempt to remove the shifter.

sorry for the blurry picture but as you can see there is a lot of red inside the hole. a lot more was on the sides until it was scraped off..

I took a huge flatblade screwdriver, put it in the hole were the stock shifter was, and without touching any of the tranny internals, and pulled the screwdriver from side to side untill the stock housing popped off. And be carefull.. when mine finally broke free the shifter housing flew into the air and the screwdriver cut my arm. But I love the B&M so it was worth it

hey one question ive got for you guys who have the b&m does it shorten the height of the shifter at all? i know the pricipal of how the b&m works for shortening the throw but im hoping that it does shorten the actual shifter some so it will eliminate the gap between my shift **** and the boot.

What I would recomend is to lighty tap it with a hammer untill u break the 10 year old seal. Thats what I did when i was installing my gotham racing short shifter. I can't speak for the B&M shifter personally, but I know my shifter is slightly shorter and is soposed to be exactly like the B&M.

thanks for your help.. it seems i will be digging at my shifter from now until the detonation of the shifter.

I will measure the two once the stock shifter is out.. but i bet someone on this forum already has an answer to your question.

I had that problem installing it on Waysho's car.

Took like 5 minutes of solid banging with a hammer to eventually come loose!

Just keep at it.

That is one word you don't want to use around your FD. She might hear you and get some ideas

Yeah took a little banging on my part too.. but it finally came off

Here is the differance in sizes between the stock shifter and the B&M shifter..

1st pic maked it look a lot larger. However, the B&M is around 1mm smaller than the stock..

I sure hope not.. She was rebuilt just 900 miles ago.. but on another note.. goodfellaFD3S I have got to say that your FD is looking good. Never had the chance to say that due to not registering sooner.

A little trick of the trade for you guys with this same question. To close that gap just cut a small square piece of sponge and push it down the shaft. Then install the boot over and the sponge will hold up the leather boot to whatever height you desire eliminating any gaps.

At first I did not add the bushing on the B&M (after fully installing it). After one test run loud rattling noises could easily be heard. Then it hit me after reading your post.. duh.. the bushings.. So I attached the stock bushing onto the B&M shifter. Now it is perfect.
