Why not replace them? You can get them from MazdaSurplus for like $8ea:

Yeah, I'd just replace them.

Or... you could buy one of those fancy fiberglass hatches... x-mas gift to yourself?

Does the car have a wing? If so, forget it.

FWIW my R2, with stock R2 wing, has 2 shocks. When it's warmer out, they actually lift the hatch for me when I release it. When it's colder out, they at least hold it steady.

My memory tells me there are two models of struts from mazda, one for no wing, one for with wing.
You can also get after-market heavy duty ones, but there my be some cosmetic blip on the nice covers.
If anybody has a good choice of aftermarket gas struts that fit right in and support the heavy wing, post!!!

Would the struts out of an MX-3/MX-6 do the job do you think cause im just gonna go rip some off an old wrecked MX if they work rather than ordering new parts from mazda and paying out the a$$ for them

If you really want to be a cheap bastard (like me), do this:

Go out and buy a 10" piece of 1/2" 3 sided aluminum channel. When you open the hatch, just slide it over the exposed piston. It will hold the hatch open.

You could even glue a piece of velcro on one side so that it will stay in place on your rear carpet, when not in use.

My hatch stays open. This worked great on my 82 GSL.

I looked on mazdasurplus then looked at the mazda part number list off this CD I got. Looks like there are two models, but it is not clear which is the heavy duty for use with the wing on the hatch. The CD talks about a model for the hard suspension and one for the normal suspension. I am guessing the hard suspension might be the more powerful gas strut, but the parts list is not clear. Can anybody confirm?
CD:
Right side
8BFA-62-620 hard suspension
8BF9-62-620 normal suspension
Left side
8BF6-63-620 hard suspension
8BF5-63-620 normal suspension
that is eight bee 8B at the front.
(Assuming I wrote these down right last night.)
