Has anyone here done the 5th gear syncro themselves????

Here is the deal, I've got the tranny laying on the floor so I dont need any info there. I've got the syncro and upgraded shift select spindle laying on my work bench. I have never crackec open a trans before so I would like a little help and info before hand if possible.

Here is what I'm looking for.....

any more parts I'll need like gaskest, ect...

what tools are required? I want to have all the tools sitting there so I dont have to make a trip and leave the trans sitting there with its guts hanging out.

Last thing, is it pretty straight forward? Is there anything tricky to it that I should know? Can someone give me a brief run down of what to do or point me in the direction of a step by step proceedure?

They told me at Mazda you might as well rebuild the whole trans to do a syncro fix....I was like hmmm ok and left lol

Thanks for any help!!!

I talked with Rob at Pineapple Racing and mentioned my 5th gear syncro is gone. I asked for a quote and he said it would be better for me to have him talk me through it than to send the tranny anywhere. He charges a consulting fee, but it would be alot less than shipping it anywhere or having someone else do it. You should contact him and talk about it. I plan to once I am willing to not have use of the car for a while.

Your one step ahead of me... I should have the tranny out Wed tho.... don't have any parts because I'm wondering if I want to tackle it myself... or have someone else do it.

I'm about to call our local guy at Mazda (does some FD work.... not bad) and see if he has ever done this job and what it entailes/costs.

Sweet! If someone does this before me.... whatever you do get ahold of a digi cam (digital video if you can) and take PICS PICS PICS.... and if you could... do a write up!

Depending on when my parts get in... I want to try and have the FD back on the road late next week... meaning I have to get the 5th gear syncros fixed up by then.

OK, I just got off the phone with Rob at PineappleRacing, he says once you get the tranny on a work bench swaping the syncro is like a 10-20 minute job (for him anyway). He said if you get the expanded view from the shop manual and look at that while doing it then it'll be a piece of cake. You just pull a few snap rings, replace the syncro and button it back up and wola, thats it.

The only parts needed is the syncro, if you have a 93 or 94 you can also replace the shift select spindle with the 95+ one as it has a stronger spring so you wont go from 2nd to 5th. I didnt ask him about the select spindle as I'm not doing this, I have a 95 and it should already have the stronger spring. If you have high miles or the rear main seal leaks you can replace it, I've only got 40K and he said if its not leaking dont worry about it. If you have 100K its only a matter of time so replace it.

I'm going to take some pics and maybe a little video. My digi camera can take 15 second videos so maybe between a few short videos and few pics i can document it fairly well.

I'm going to try it sometime this week.

BTW - You can get a copy of the shop manual broke down by chapter here......

Wish me luck, IF ANYONE HAS ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD LET ME KNOW!!!!!!

Pics Pics Pics! I also will be tackling some tranny work. I have a 75k 93 tranny in my FD (bad 5th sync) and I have a 25K 95 tranny sitting on my bench. The problem is the 95 tranny was in a accident at some point or another and had a little damage to the extension housing. So I get to swap some parts around to make the 95 a good tranny. I figure it would be a good idea to crack the 95 open and have a look at the internals and make sure everything is all right. I will also take pictures when I get the ***** to do this! Thanks for the info on Rob, now I figure if the sh*t gets to deep I can call him up and finsh the project.

I've done it myself as well and it isn't that hard of a job. The only tricky part for me was make an extension for my gear puller to pull the bearings off a 14" shaft and using an appropriate length and diameter of pipe to press them back in place. While you're there you might as well replace thei shift select spindle since you have a '93. My 5th gear used to grind almost every time but now it's the best synchro in my transmission.
Mahjik's gear puller looks exactly like the one I made and excellent pictures by the way
