Angry OMG $1100 to fix my trans! ...do you take bendover express?

OK, dropped of my tran's at Anaheim Gear this morning and get a call back this afternoon. I was expecting rth gear synchro, maybe 5th gear and/or shift select spindle. He tells me all new one two sliders and synchros, new 5th gear, parts, tax, labor, ky jelly, etc. So in a panic I call Nippon Motors to get a used one for $600, but they can't get any. ok, so now how am I supposed to pay for this?

They are screwing you!

The 5th gear syncro is like $14 from Mazda comp. The gear itself, rarely bad, is $75 or so. The shift select spindle is $26.

The sliders are bad? Can't imagine that but it is possible, they can't be too expensive.

Is this an entire trans rebuild? New bearings and syncros on all gears? If so that sounds about right.

5th gear syncro is repairable without tearing the entire trans down too...

A friend and I rented a gear puller and pulled apart the entire tranny, replaced the gears and syncro's and reinstalled in 1/2 a day.

The manual has exact instructions and its surprisingly easy once your in there. Kinda made me wonder what the big fuss was all about. Lots of little pieces but you just lay them out in a line as they are removed.

It should be around $300 to pull the trans out, take it apart and put it back together (just had mine resealed at this price). Add $100 for labor while your in there and the costs that turbojeff pointed out and you looking at around $500 - $600 worst case scenario... take it somewhere else .

Well all this mechanic stuff is new to me and it's allways scary doing stuff you've never done before but the gear puller rental sounds pretty tempting.

He said I damaged the tran's by driving it with a bad clutch. I did drive it untill the clutch "completely" gave out but I don't see how that did so much damage. The only problem I had was 5th gear synchro. I don't see how all the synchros got damaged and I don't even know what the sliders are or why they got damaged either.

I don't see how the clutch would damage the trans.

I had mine rebuilt. I put in all new syncro's, bearings, a new fifth gear, brand new starter, new synthetic oil and put ina light weight flywheel and clutchmasters stage 3 clutch all for the rock bottom price of $2200 CND. But now I have warrenty and a brand new transmission. I think its worth spending a little more money so that you have some warrenty instead of doing it yourself and screwing up and then redoing everything. Just my $0.02.

Hey, you can always go Ebay...I picked up a clean J-spec less than a year ago for like $350...I always find some used ones on there every now and then. Unfortunitly, I only found a almost new one right now that you might want to try to bid on...

$1500-1750 is the standard rate to rebuild an rx7 transmission where I am.

$1100 is a deal.

Here's a nice page that Mahjik put together about replacing the 5th gear synchro:
http://mahjik.homestead.com/files/ho...o/synchro.html

I just printed it out to start my replacement on a tranny I picked up used. I got the synchro parts and seals from Ray Crowe.

Thanks Mahjik and Ray!

I'm sick of this! Life is like a Steven Segal movie and you need to kick everyone's f'ckn *** everywhere you go! I'm going to apply to the secret service so I can kill everybody that screws people over ...AhaAHAHhHhH!

$150 reassemble fee? No, that's called "blackmail" fee!
All I asked for was rth gear synchro. Why don't you just put the damn synchro in, since that's what you charge for the synchro anyhow.

hold on let me ask. Nope, that won't work. You have a bad 1st, 2nd, sliders, flex capacitor, and whatever else I can think of.

No, I only want the synchro.

ok, reassemble fee + synchro + synchro labor fee= $350

F'U, kiissss my freakin ***! give it to me in a box & ill frekin throw it in the trash b4 you get a f'n penny from me. (insert Steven Segal here).

The JDM ones go for $450 now but none are available.
Does anyone know (ZGN) the above ebay user (has no proof of purchase)?

GoRacer, was there any kind of estimate or minimum service fee or anything when you dropped your tranny off? Did you sign anything at the drop-off?

I just signed an invoice that states: Lost job Mazda RX7 Turbo 5 speed trans (in box)

I should have made them just do the synchro but I was so pissed I didn't want to give them any money but now I wish I just had asked for the owner or called the police.
