I looked in to Racing Beat's universal muffler, which is the longest, has stainless packing and it's cheap but no tip.

I allways wanted to try Borla "multicore" which is the second longest, could possibly be even quieter but has no tip and it's tripple the price. It has SS scrubble and the inlet devides in to three tubes then back to one at the exit.

Since I couldn't find a source for tips larger then 2.5" diameter I looked in to a Magnaflow (universal race) which actually has a tip allready and it's cheap. I was told by Magnaflow that their packing is SS with I beleive the outermost part something else, maybe ceramic or fiberglass. I forget but it's something like 90% SS scrubble.

Yes, I know I can get a complete Racing Beat muffler but it's $500 and I can have the Magnaflow built for $250. For another $200 I can add an 18" resonator/presilencer.

 

I have a magnaflow muffler with custom 3" tubing from the turbo to the muffler. I love the sound and it looks real nice not super huge like alot of other brands.

 

^ which one? are you single or twin? oem, high flow, metalic or mid pipe? any pics?

 

I just used mild steal and a magnaflow for my 4" beast...

 

One of my friends made his own 4 inch exhaust for his drag 2G talon. I believe it cost him around 400 using quality materials and a magnaflow muffler. I helped a bit, not really too difficult.

GoRacer try looking under magnaflow's diesel products, you should find a good selection of mufflers etc. for 4 inch exhaust piping.

 

I believe Rich had a custom exhaust made for his current setup. You might PM him for the detail.

Sean at A-Spec fabbed me up a very nice full turboback 4 inch exhaust system using diesel flex couplers and wide clamps. It seals very well (there are no flanges or gaskets needed) and doesn't weight much at all. There's a magnaflow circular muffler in the midsection and the rear. Noise level is tolerable, and it's actually quieter than a recent FD I heard at DGRR with 3 inch dp, mp, and kakimoto catback. Being that you're in cali, I'm not sure my system would fly in your neck of the woods though.

 

I had a 3.5" stainless Magnaflow system built for my 2 rotor and a 4" Magnaflow system built for my 3 rotor project. Both setups have two straight through 'race' mufflers; a long round one in the middle and an oval one at the tail. I was very happy with the sound of the 3.5" system and would recommend it to anyone with a 2 rotor setup. It was much more of a challenge to fit the 4" under the car with enough ground clearance and I'm not convinced there is really a benefit to having the extra .5" of diameter unless you're using race gas and chasing huge power.

Here is Ver 1 of the 3.5" system (before the tailpipe tip was welded on). As pictured it was too loud so I later went back and added another race muffler to the midpipe. With that addition the volume and tone was just about right.

This is a temporary solution for now. I can't go 3.5" or 4" untill I get a 4" DP made. I currently have a Moroso Spiral flow in the mid pipe but I think it's too restrictive. I wanted to replace it with Racing Beat's pre silencer but even the med wouldn't fit. I don't want them to weld in aluminized steel in my SS mid pipe, so I may get a resonator from coast fab. If they give me a deal for 2 then i'll do a 18" one on the exhaust pipe to. For the exhaust can it would be either Racing Beat universal 18" (but would need a tip) long can or Magnaflow 14" that allready has a tip on it. My Buddy Club is too loud with street port and I didn't want to hack it up. So I will sell it after I put something else on.

 

Rob, if you want it completely fab'd Rich at Magnaflow can do this. He's done work for me before, and he does great work. Let me know if you want his info. They are relatively close to you.

Where can u get a RB universal? Never seen that before.

 

It seems like you are saying that its a bad thing if a muffler doesn't come with a tip. If you are doing a custom job isn't this what you would want? I mean then you can pick exactly what you want...

Nameless - Thanks bro, yeah they are pretty close to me. I would like to have stainless piping and clean welds. I saw Magnaflow's exhaust with the tip today and it was real sweet. Polished stainless and can't see the weld for the tip. Extemely clean but was a bit short at 14" length. Click on the underlined words on my reply on the top of this page for the links. Oh, the universal mufflers are listed in Racing Beat's 2nd gen section even though some are 3".

dis1 - Most tips are for small exhaust (2" or 2.5") and some for trucks (4" or 5"). We fall in the middle at 3" pipe. The other thing you aren't considering is, the one with a tip is a killer deal! $120 for a polished exhaust with a polished tip! Now if I just get a can, say the 18" brushed stainless for $100, add $20-$40 for polished version and now add another $20-$50 for a polished tip (and still have to weld it on) guessing the length.

The shop sugested a longer muffler with an angled offset to reduce sound. I don't know if the angle will do anyhting. I'll have to call them and ask. Part # 12259

 

Does anyone have CFM ratings on exhaust? I can't find my comparison link.

Well according to this: David Vizard's rule of thumb that a muffler should flow 2.2 CFM for every horsepower you'd expect to make without the muffler.
I would need 770CFM @ 350hp and 990CFM @450hp. So that means the Spiral flow would work for stock twins but when I crank up the boost I need to ditch it.

 

I have full 3" from turbo back with a racing beat universal presilencer (large) going into the 32" magnaflow muffler. I love the sound.
