for some reason......... my 5th gear is grinding everytime i shift. it doesnt matter how deep i step on the clutch it still grinds for about half a second. the only way i found to avoid it is to shift in slow motion....... can anyone help me or at least have ideas on whats wrong? thanks everyone

you have a bad synchro...tis common in these cars to lose fifth...happens when you miss a shift to third...happens very easily...I missed a shift a long while back...burned out fifth and reverse..had the same symptoms.

gotta rebuild...new syncros...but get a short shifter...that will cure your problem. you can also upgrade some other internals over the stock setup (forks and whatnot i believe)

dont miss any more shifts

good luck with the tranny...sorry to hear that.

Change your shift select spindle to the newer part #. It has a stronger spring and will help to prevent from missing the 2nd to 3rd miss-shifts. Part #: R503-17-550 and the gasket is S524-17-112 Less than $50 for both.

it cost me 500 bucks for the rebuild...I dropped the tranny (a total PIO without a lift) and did the rest of the labor myself.

its probably five hours labor at a shop..plus the bench fee for the rebuild and parts...maybe a grand all together...depending on the damage to the internals.

thats my guess.

ask the guys on the east forum..or northeast..whatever it is..someone there surely knows of a local place.

If you are looking to make it last as long as possible... I had a bad synchro in an old car of mine and I just put in Redline synth in the trans and double clutched into 5th... If you make it so the Rpms match what they would be in 5th them it shouldnt grind... That is until you fix it.

My 5th synchro grinds too, just have to shift slow. How many times do you really need to powershift into 5th anyway? I can blame the previous owner though, I've never missed a 3rd gear shift. :P

this problem still happens in my car to. My buddy grinded hard into thrid and that same day my 5th was buzzin. What i do is let the rpm drop between 2500 and 3000 rpm and i get a clean shift. I cant afford a rebuild right no so thats my fix.

Damn - you mean there's actually a fifth gear?

(I've lived with mine busted for 5 years and literally carry the parts around in a baggie in my storage bin to fix it. Match revs and it slides in like silk - takes a little practice. Make sure you FLUSH the tranny with LOTS of fluid to get the broken teeth from the synchro outta there before they can do more damage. Take it to a lube shop and slip the tech an extra $10 to pump the case full a couple of times, then drain it completely.
It's a messy job - don't try this at home!)

Well, I finally lost the fifth gear synchro. It has been going for a while, then i missed a shift last night and it is GONE! I'm planning on repairing it myself. It has 127k on it, but with exception of the synchro, "feels" like it is in good shape.

Does anyone have a list of parts that should be replaced while I'm in there anyway? Like I said it appears to be in good condition, just wondering if there are any parts that typically wear and are not directly noticable.

i did the job myself. it cost me about$120 including the gear oil. its not hard to do. just make sure you have a clean place to work and keep all the parts in order. the 5th syncro is the first one you come to when you take the tranny apart. i also replaced the shift select spindle and it does make a big difference. hope this helps.
