Is this a good deal?

To all,

I’m planning on purchasing a 1994 Rx7 from an original owner. He's asking $17,950 and told me the lowest he would go is $16,000. It has 135k miles with a pettit racing engine upgrade (didn't specify what was done) at 95k miles. He said he upgraded the engine as safety measure before his extended warranty expired. I was hoping it was stock, but apparently it has a few minor mods. Down pipe, front sway bar, blistein adjustable shocks, dealer springs, 4 new tires w/ 1 year use, stock cat gutted out, K&N air filter, metal cooler relief valve to replace the original plastic, clutch replaced, brake pads, and boost/vacuum gauge. It has a small leak in the secondary turbo (didn't specify) and has never been raced or abused. Although why would upgrade the suspension/down pipe and gut out cat if weren't planning on driving it hard. Do you guys think this is good deal, or should I be patient? Also, if any of you guys have 94 fd3s FS. Please let me know.

Thanks,

Brad

It wouldn't be worth that on the mainland at that mileage, but given your location and limited FD access, who knows. Contact some of the local guys and see what they think.

Could you give me a price that you think it’s worth? He emphasized it being white and rare, which I’m sure they are.

I don't know, that car is probably worth $12-14k tops here on the mainland. Like I said, however, you are in a much different situation with a limited amount of FDs available. That's why I suggested you talk to local RX-7 guys....I know that "Reted" and "Big Island Seven" live in Hawaii (user names are close, probably not exact).

I just found out that white only came in 94-95, not 93 , so being white in color doesn't really have anything much to do with it being a rare color, but since 94 and 95 cars are hard to come by anyway, any color in those years would be considred "rare" ... still seems a little steep though. I say $14.5K tops

Like said prior, being in Hawaii, your limited. Here that would be overpriced by about $4000, but there, you probably should bite the bullet.

I think I’ll wait, even though rx7's are limited in Hawaii. I still think this seller is asking a little to much considering it has a few problems. Like FormulaRX said $14.5 is the most he'd give and I have to agree with him. Again, thanks for giving me your opinion guys

That's why I suggested you talk to local RX-7 guys....I know that "Reted" and "Big Island Seven" live in Hawaii (user names are close, probably not exact).
Big island sevens lives on the big island (different market) not sure about reted. Other names that come to mind is archangelx and iron jones (I dont know either of them personally)

I would wait, 18k is a lot for a car with that type of miles, even in Hawaii.

Also, people won't sell these cars out here for no reason. I know of at least 2 FDs that were sold in the buy and sell papers that had big problems soon after being sold (engine and possibly turbo). FYI, most of the FDs that hit the papers are in the $14k range (no idea on how much final price is) and have 60-80k miles.

Honestly, you'd be better off finding a car on ebay in california and ship it over. Shipping costs are probably around $900. You can get a car in decent condition for maybe 12-14k. So, even if the car has engine trouble or whatever, you still have maybe 3-7k that you have saved from purchasing the car above.

Remember the car has high miles, so the struts need to be replaced/upgraded. I dont know why he would gut the cat, unless its clogged or he did this as a "poor man's mod". Hopefully, he upgraded the ecu to support these mods. All the other "mods" are more mainetenance and reliability related. I hope he has already replaced most of the sensors, rad hoses, etc.

Keep in mind that if your car has trouble, you're pretty much on your own. Only one of the mazda dealers knows how to work on these cars ($$$) and there are no real specialty rotary shops out there. I believe big island 7s works out of his garage and does good work, but he lives on a different island.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions or whatever. I might be willing to check out the car with you, but honestly, you can find all the information you need and possible pitfalls right here on the forum.

hypersports wants 26k i believe

http://www.forumshawaii.net/phpBB2/v...421&highlight=
walters car

hmm if you dont mind getting a new motor theres a yellow 93 in mililani that the guy said hed sell for 8-9 grand i believe only problem i think is a blown motor

my friend that bought my red 93 might be interested in selling it too...
it has a cf hood, dp, mp, exhaust, autometer boost gauge, a/f, and water temp, 12" kicker sub, was tan interior but i changed everything except the carpet, seats and belts to black...turbos smoke on cold start and the ac compressor is bad...but might sell it for pretty cheap i can ask if youre interested and i have pics if you want

but anyways you prolly could find a way better condition car on the mainland and ship it over... my car, iron4jones, hypersports, and a few others were all purchased off the island

Do you guys think $12,500 is a reasonable price to offer him or is that still too high?

Good luck paying anything less than 16K here on the island. I had to look off island for mine and with shipping you will still pay out of the ***, like I did. I can take a look at the car with you if you want. E-mail me iron_4_jones@hotmail.com

Hi guys,

I made him an offer at $15,000 but he didn't respond to my email, so I thought he wasn't interested (that was 2 weeks ago). Last night I received a call from him and he willing to let it go for $15,000 because he needs the money to buy a 4door sedan for his real estate business. I'm kind of tired now after dealing with him for at least 3 weeks and at the same time trying to work out deals with other people too, not to mention arranging my flight to California to look at it. Somehow now I don't feel like offering him $15,000 anymore, I’m lazy right now any suggestions? this car is located in Cali, I think a lot people thought it was in Hawaii.

buy a new subaru is your best option.
