Guaging Interest for a New Product Idea (not anti-det ;))

Hey guys,
Alright I just started working with a Tempterature Control and Display and just about anything and everything on temprature, its amazing what I have learnd. Anyways, I can get a very good deal on anything temperature, as I was working and reading invoices, I noticed was a car manufactuer. So I started thinking of making a temp display for our FDs. (or any other gen). It would display 5 different temps, and it could cycle through them auto or you press a button to cycle, you can set the time also. Also this is a DIGITAL temp gauge accurate to 1/2 a degree. I was thinking of using for water, oil, air intake temp before IC , air intake temp after IC, and maybe EGT. This would replace 5 guages. No price has yet been determinded since were looking for someone that runs the display on 12 volts. Any comments or suggestions are welcomed. Flame if you must.

[EDIT] I'll have pics soon, the display is slightly larger than a Greddy Turbo Timer.

I would be interested for a reasonable price... and I like the "air intake temp before IC , air intake temp after IC" feature. It would be sweet to now the temps before and after...

Add pressure readings, slap it in a compact HUD format, and you'd have a winner.

I like the idea, actually what I would like is an adjustable air temp device that will work as a thermostat, so I can turn a device on or off based on air temperature. I want this for my water injection kits that I sell.

Also, I'd like to be able to monitor my cabin air temp from my a/c so I can turn my A/C on and off based on the air temp in the car.

Whatever you build, it would be beneficial if it can send a signal to a relay to power a device when a threshold is met.

Not to be all me too-ish, but I'd actually place money on this. And if you run across a HUD for this, I'd REALLY spend the money. No foolin', that's be pretty cool, and probably not THAT hard, given the cluster hood and the angle of the windshield. Good one, Jim! A little trigger for the back of the steering wheel to cycle through... Heck, if you made one with sucker cups, folk could tune their own cars! Hmmm....

What type of Pressure readings? Like boost? I dont even know if they have pressure and temp in the same device. We deal with alot of pressure products too since pressure and temp go hand in hand sometimes. HUD would probably bit pricey.

Zero banger, about the relays, that may be costly as well. This idea is as cheap as possible, all these ideas are possible but the idea of making it cheaper than 5 guages was the idea.

It really shouldn't be a problem.
The best way to set this up would be to utilize the gauge as a basic LCD display. LCD display is then hooked up to a small control box. Control box is then hooked up to as many sensors as it is designed for, and, of course, the CPU in the control box will be able to read each sensor simultaneously, differentiate whats what, and allow you to view which ever one you choose.

Here's another little idea...

Have the unit programmable with an audio message. If your water temp reaches X amount, the unit will tell you via a speaker or car speakers what the temperature is. You can program it to tell you once it is too high or once it is within 5 degrees of your target temp. This way, you never have to worry about starring at the gauge, and you can use the visual for something like boost.

"Hey fatboy, you have reached a water temperature of 220 degrees again. Get your fat foot off the gas"

Fuel pressure, oil pressure, boost/vacuum.

Not necessarily. A bright LED package reversed could be read off the windshield. I've built prototypes with Cyberdyne gauges, but have never been happy with the appearance.

I think that would be cool if the display was nice looking. Could you add a recall mode? It would be very nice to have for racing. I think you would need to have a cycle mode so that when your driving you don't have to hit a button. What kind of display where you thinking? LED?

It has a cycle mode, where you can set it at each point for 1 to 10 seconds max. The display honestly isnt anything fancy, as soon as I get home I'll have a pic for you guys.

Would it be possible to make it closer than 1/2 a degree... If you could make it to the tenth of a degree that would be nicer.

just a thought though, I would probably buy one, if you could make it so it wasn't that obtrusive.

Well I said their accurate to 1/2 a degree a 1/8 or more and your talking platinum wires that run 45$ per foot. There is no reason for any more.

I would have to see on the pressure one honestly if you want digital pressure though I dont think It can have a hold feature or anything, for that just get a turbo timer with that feature. Like I said at the begining the main interest in this is to elminate 5 guages from your cluster(s) and I plan to make it cheaper than 5 analog guages (Defi, Auto Meter, Greddy etc)

Just 'cause I like being a tool, he actually wants it to be precise. It could read down to .00001 (precision) and still be off by a thousand degrees (accuracy).

Right, because a couple tenths of a degree makes such a BIG difference...

Does anyone make anything like this? I am assuming that all the cost would come from the sending units and not the display itself. Any idea as far as cost?

Actually the display is quite pricey since it cycles through the temps and is made for a 12 volt. I think it may be like 70 to 80$ my cost (which is about 30% off list). I want to get it below 250$ because 5 Defi guages easily will go over 130$ each over 500$ for all 5. So once they find me the 12v and the probes plus a minor labor cost.

I know about SPA dual gauges, but thats still not the same. I like this idea becasue I hate cars that have gauges everywhere.

So this would basically be like the defi-link that nsaneGideon posted?

I am very interested in this, especially at that price. I would just like a smaller display than the defi, more like somethig that could be mounted in a standard Din opening.

Keep us posted.
