Gauges Install

Does any one happen to have a link or instructions on how to hook up a boost gauge? I have heard there is a nipple somewhere that you hook the mechanical one up to? anyone have a picture of it?

thanks-Nick

its on the upper intake manifold/surge tank. if you look above the turbos, near the engine lift hook, there is a small nipple capped off with a blk cap. just unhook it and plug in the vacuum line to the boost gauge. there should be an identical nipple with a vacuum line attached on the opposite side.

I would recommend using a 'T' fitting off the line to the MAP (Boost) Sensor. People have noted different readings coming off the UIM nipple. Using the line to the MAP sensor you'll be seeing exactly what the MAP sensor is reading (which makes more sense IMO).

Yes, there is a line that runs from the backside of the UIM, to a small filter, and then to the MAP sensor. I would put the 'T' after the filter.

Who sells t-fittings? Sorry for the newb question. Also, a pic would be nice if possible, as I'd like to get the correct part.

Thanks,

www.mcmaster.com, but their stuff can get a little expensive. If it's not in the local hardware store, it's there.

Otherwise, the local hardware store is the place to go.

Places like AutoZone or NAPA carry them. You need a "Vacuum 3-Way Tee" fitting. I can't remember the size so just take some 4mm vacuum tubing with you to test the one you need.

So I should just put it in line with the Map sensor hose that goes to the underside of the UIM?

Wow, i didn't even know about tapping into the line by the MAP sensor, I hooked mine up to the nipple on the UIM. I may T into that line instead now that you guys say it makes a difference.

Is there a pattern to the difference between those locations? I.e. reading on the MAP line is lower, or higher, than on the nipple at the other side of the UIM?
Or maybe more/less spiking observed?

I'll probably just try it, and see what, if any, difference there is on my car. Just being curious.

I tee'd into the MAP years ago based on that is what Mazda is sending to the ECU. I always wondered if the easy tap off on the IM read different. Do too my fears that a leak so close to the MAP would cause a bad reading to the ECU. I teed in using a brass tee (auto store) with swage nipples.. it was hell getting the hose into it. I also covered the hoses inthis area with poly braid wire cover to protect from abbrasion. and monted the T by cable tieing to the braket on the firewall just outboard of the MAP sensor bracket. In later years I switched from a mechanical boost gauge to Autometers new full sweep stepper motor model with peak memory and warning settings. thus I rerouted the line from this T to the guages MAP sensor which I installed on the fender inner wall at the firewall. Wasted weight, two MAP sensors inline.... why doesn't someone make a gauge that can read off factory signals.

here is where I hooked my new defi d mechanical boost gauge. I used the "t" fitting that came with the gauge. easy enough clamped and tied all hose ends. have not clamped the boost end. still have to run it through the fender hole and into engine bay. easy **** once you identify where the boost sensor is and where to tie it it at. heres a pic. giving back. I have obtained all my knowledge from this forum. search enough and you can find anything you want to know. peace
