is this gauge crap?

I have installed a cyberdyne digital water temp gauge with the sender tapped into the filler neck in front of the thermostat. Still, though I have installed the fan mod switch, the miata thermo switch, a new thermostat, topped of the filler neck more times than I can think, and burped the system as well, my temp gauge showed 205F on the interstate tonight, and then steadily rocketed to over 240F once I exited the interstate and drove a few short blocks! Once I turned the heater on, it cooled down to about 218F.
I know there are lots of mixed opinions on the autometer gauges, though my boost gauge appears to be fine. Is the cyberdyne absolute crap? Is it possibly just the sender? Will another gauge work with the same sender or should I linearize it with the stock gauge?

Much thanks,

Have you verified that your fans are turning on and that your thermostat is operational?

the thermostat is brand new, and I tested it in a pot of water first. Haven't verified the fans though, is there some way they malfunction. I have installed the miata thermoswitch

You get what you pay for, Autometer and Cyberdyne are cheap gauges, while they might be acurate now there's no telling how long it will last.

What's the climate like in Denver? That would seem acurate if you lived in Texas. These cars usually run about 205 and some do hit the 240 range in the city.

oh, and no a/c on. I am hoping this gauge is just wrong. I plan to completely flush the system tomorrow and start over filling it again.

Well, the fans should come on at 207F with the Miata switch. If you don't trust the gauge, just drive your car a short trip and leave it running in the driveway. The fans should come on within a few minutes. If not, I would suspect your switch installation or some problem with the fans (relays, etc).

EDIT: Actually, turning the A/C on should turn the fans on as well, although this won't verify if they are coming on at 207F like they should be.

Aren't Cyberdyne, Intellitronix and Nordskog one in the same? I bought the Nordksog (formerly Intellitronix) digital water temp gauge and it works fine for me. I hear that Intellitronix/Nordskog make quality gauges since they are used for boat motors and they ave a good reputation in that area.

are there certain fuses or relays I should check for the fans? I remember them coming on once at around 210 according to my gauge, but they only stayed on very briefly.
thanks again

I had over heating issue not too long ago.. And when you kick your AC on, you should have both fans spinning.. If it doesn't.. try different fan speed.. I have PFC and at #3 on the fan control, the fans spin..

Otherwise, you could cross some wires on fan relay and make them come on..

Also, make sure your bottom cover is on.. The under belly cover.. It actually help flow air thru ac condensor and radiator.. Lot of people make mistake thinking that it will help cool the engine.. but by taking it off, the air moves to the less restricted area.. which will by pass the radiator..

Hope this helps..

I have the bottom pan on, how do I try a different fan speed? You also said that I can cross some wires on the fan relay and make them come on. What do you mean? Which wires, and will this make them come on when they are supposed to or just come on all of the time?
thanks

I plan to crank the car this afternoon, drive it around the block or so, come back and let it run and see if the fans come on and when they come on, maybe that will help you guys help me.

ran the car and let it cool, opened the filler neck cap, and stuck a thermometer in it, which read 108 while the gauge read 113, then cooled some more and the thermometer read 106, while the gauge read 111. The sensor is only a few inches below in the filler neck, so I am assuming that the gauge is about 5 degrees high
