Gas in oil filler neck.

Just recently i discovered some green creamy liquid on my oilfiller lid and neck.

First i thought i was coolant cause of the green color, but know it smells gasoline and im sure it's that instead.

What could be causing this?

I've searched but couldnt find much, i must say the searching was alot easier 2 years ago.

Tobias - Cold Scandinavian weather and short drives. You will get this build up in the filler neck/cap. Take it for a good run

The residue is common and the gas odor is common. Just keep up with your oil changes.

I almost always take it for a good run. It smells gas badly so i don't think it's water at all. And besides it was warm today and i still had it, 20 celcius.

Gas gets into the oil and therefore the oil smells like gas. Newish motors don't do this unless they were poorly done. When gas is injected into the combustion chamber some of it may make its way past the side seals and into the eccentric where it will then intermix with the engine oil. This not only makes the oil smell like gas but it dillutes the oil; a bad thing.

You'll notice the gas smell when you change the oil. The harder you've run the car the more you'll smell. My old motor had 66,000 miles on it when I bought the car and the oil wreaked of gas anytime I changed it after a track event. Current motor has about 30,000 miles on it and I still only get a faint hint of gas smell in the oil. That means my side and corner seals are still in excellent shape!

The gook in the top of the oil filler neck and cap is just condensation trapped in the system. Those of us who run our cars hard and often never see it

My renesis does this (esp in the colder weather) and it freaked me the hell out. My wife drives it so I guess she doesn't rev it and therefore heat it up like I might if I had it more often. I was assured by lots of people that it is completely normal and not a sign of any problem. My 8 runs great, so I believe.

So if i'm understanding you correctly this means that my engine that has around 52,000 miles on it needs a rebuild soon?

Here's an older post:

I change the oil every 1500-2000 miles with 20W-50, the car has 62K miles on it now.

All the other FDs and TIIs I've owned also had this smell. It seems completely normal.

You'll also find that some brands of oil are more susceptible to causing this - have you changed brands recently??

I had this when I ran Castrol in my S4 once, and it disappeared again when I switched brands.

Not at all. Less gas smell means more "perfect" seals in the engine but it by no means spells inherent doom coming.

I've had the gas smell in the oil since the car was new in 1992. It now has 49K on it, and the smell hasn't changed much, nor has the engine had any problems related to that.

Yes, I have also had the cream-colored oil/water emulsion and condensation on the underside of the filler cap since the car was new.
