I have a 1994 Touring Model. A couple of weeks ago, I smelled gas in the passenger compartment. I then checked for gas leaks and noticed a gas smell coming from the engine compartment and a small puddle of gas on the floor underneath my car near the engine area. My car was parked for a couple of days. I then took my car to a shop and they checked all the fuel lines and could not find a leak. The day before I brought my car in, the smell went away. My gas tank was not full at the time when I smelled the gas, so I ruled out overfilling my gas tank.

My car has been the the shop ever since and they have been unable to smell or find any gas leaks. Does anyone have any idea where the leak may be coming from.

Yeah check the dampener..... mine went bad. You will have to remove the upper intake manifold then prime the fuel system. It is not the easiest to spot, but around the injectors you might see a puddle of fuel ON THE BLOCK. I just noticed the reflection of liquid from shining my flash light on it. To get to it you will more than likely have to remove the alternator, solenoid rack, ignition coils, ACV, and some of the injector stuff. It does take a little work. You can also get a lot done while in the process. I did the silicone hose job. Depending on what you have left over cash wise from the $130 price of the dampener, look into jethot coating your manifold (polishing would also work), maybe upgrading your injectors, changing your spark plugs and wires. Being that there are so many mods which require you to remove the manifold its good to get a few done at once.

The shop that my car is in checked the areas where they suspected a possible fuel leak. If the dampener is faulty, wouldn't the leak be a constant leak and not stop?

The only thing I could think of is maybe the fuel is building up on your block then it gets to a point that it overflows and drops on the ground. I didn't pay too much attention to my fuel smell untill I saw a spot of gas, then I got worried. What kind of shop is it in?

My car right now specializes in performance upgrades. They seem to do a lot of Supra's and RX7's. I brought my car in to do the intercooler upgrade and new teledyne radiator. I also had two coolant leaks.

If the gas builds up in the block, you should still smell a gas odor even though it does not drip on the ground. They took off the manifold to check all the gas lines and all the lines were dry. The car has been in the shop for two weeks and they have not noticed a gas smell. Just my luck, I brought my car in just before the Christmas holiday and they were closed for almost a week and a half. They are puzzled about the gas leak just as I am.

The most common cause of fuel leaks is the pulsation dampner going south.

Thanks guys. When I go pick up my car, I am going to see if there is still a gas leak. Then I am going straight to the gas station to fill up and drive it for a little while with the owner/mechanic to see if this problem still exist. If the problem does not exist while he is there, then I am going to monitor it closely to make sure that I do not smell anymore gas. I will let you guys know what happens when I get my car back.

Flybye: If the dampner was leaking, wouldn't it continue leaking and not stop? Oh...thanks for the thread.

I got my car back on Saturday and did could not smell anymore gas. The shop check all the possible areas and could not see any puddles of gas or smell it. With my current upgrades my car is running great. My next upgrades will be a new stereo and alarm.

If it's under pressure, it will drip drip drip. Once fuel pressure is gone after turning the engine off, then it won't drip anymore. It may also only leak when the fuel system is under high pressure. High pressure meaning you are either boosting or you had a hot start.
