Gas Gauge stopped working! Poo!

I was wondering if any had problem with their gas gauge before? Mine stopped working last week. The needle just sit at E. So I opened up my handy service manual and I need to check with a SST? WTF is SST? I am assuming it's a device that I can apply resistance to the circuit. But is there another way of checking whether if a sender unit or the gauge with out a SST? Please let me know if anyone else experienced this before.

SST=Special Service Tool. You can use a digital multimeter or ohmmeter to check the resistance of the sending unit.

Ok I pulled out the Pump+Sender unit assembly and I think I am 95% sure why it's not working but could someone who seen a sender unit verify for me...

I think the floating thingy at the end of the stick fell off so the stick just sinks!

Herer's the pix

Yup - done fell off.

Give Ray a call or post a WTB in the classifieds - assuming you can't find it floating around in your gas tank.

A new sender isn't terribly expensive, but you can probably get one used pretty cheap too. If you get a used one, make sure it's cared for and the arm isn't bent up in shipping.

But, yeah - no float, it will always think you're on empty. Good idea to get the old float out of the tank too if it's still in there.

You can make sure that is the problem if you plug it in and move the arm up and down. Just give about 30 sec. between movements and watch the fuel gauge.

It is possible when you were removing the sender the float fell off.

Make sure it isn't that the sheet metal gas tank baffles broke their spot welds and knocked the float off the sender arm.

When I got my FD it has this issue and the baffle would also bump into the + on the pump blowing the fuse but luckily not blowing the car up with a spark.
