Btw, your lid is fine. There's nothing wrong with that.

You need to get the piece that goes on the inside (not on the actual door) that is shown in the above pic.

Mine's a 93. I don't know if they did away with all that in the later years, and just had the bolt. What year is yours.

then after tearing apart the back side of the car and finding it i learned of the real problem

that black pin that slides in and out has sheared off, thats why none of this works

Sorry for the thread revival but i am having the same exact problem with my gas door.

It doesnt stay shut. I try to push it hard, then it springs right back open. Like a part that holds it shut when you push it is gone or broken.

I attached the same pic but circled the areas where i think is the problem for me.

If you look at those 2 rubber "nipples"? where there is one on the top and one on the bottom, well i dont have any of those. ITs just a hole.

Btw, i always had this problem but it was intermittent. Now i really cant have it stay closed. I have to put a piece of black electrical tape so it doesnt fly open when i drive.

The latch that isn't engaging is that black plastic nub between the stuff you circled. If you push it in with your finger it should spring back. Make sure that moves smoothly.

I've seen where the big nut on that piece gets loose and then it moves around. If it's not positioned just right it won't line up with the slot on the gas door and engage it. So fiddle with the latch and make sure it's working ok, then close the door almost completely and see that the latch and slot on the door are properly aligned.

The little plastic knub, that looks like a plastic needle does move. I checked. I pressed it repeatedly like a button to make sure it works, and it works.

Ok im having this problem again.

I took off the latch and reinstalled it, made sure its lined up straight and that cured the problem for a couple of days.

Now the gas door just stays closed for a little bit.

Like if i close the door, it will close. I go for a short drive, pull back in my house, get out of the car and find out that the door has popped open again.

Or if i leave the car overnight, with the gas door closed. THe next day i will see it popped open again.

Like it doesnt pop open right away anymore, now it will take a short period of time til it does, like it has a mind of its own.

That picture i posted above, the ones circled in red, do i need those little black rubber nipples? Because on my car, those are missing. All i see are holes where the nipples should be.

I dont see anything thats broken or cracked so i cant rule out a broken latch assembly as the problem. I think its something missing from this thing.

Any help would be appreciated. THanks

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but it looks to me like those nipples put pressure against the back of the gas door to keep it from rattling.

Maybe yours is rattling open or something? Try putting a spacer of some kind in there and see if it helps anything.

Just got back from fooling around with it and i think i got it.

The metal flap thats in the middle of the entire assembly. See pic.

...is what causes the door to stay shut (or so it seems since i was fooling around with it).

I noticed that as i was pushing the metal tab inward, made my door shut properly more and more but still if i tap on the gas door itself, it would pop open.

So then i thought, let me take a pair of channel locks and pinch the metal tab, almost like im crushing it.

I did that, closed the door and voila! It stays shut. I even fingered (LOL) the gas door hard and repeatedly to see if it will pop open and nope, it stayed.

Lets see how long it lasts though.
