Future RX-7 Owner - bit of a weird question

Hey guys, I'm currently looking into picking up an RX-7 within the next 2 months and trading in my 2006 Nissan 350Z for it (payments are getting too expensive ).

I've come across a 1992 RX-7 3rd Gen. however, it says it's a 1992 which seemed a bit odd to me because I did do some research and I know that the 3rd Generation is for 1993+. However, just in case I'm wrong or missed something, is there such thing as 3rd gens lower than a 1993 or is the ad I saw on craigslist just a typo?

Thanks!

The US market started in their sales year of 1993. However, the Japan market started a little earlier (and ran longer).

Make sure it IS at least a 93. If it's truly a 92, it's here illegally (black/grey market european or japanese import).

if you live in BC i believe you get the benefit of european and japanese spec cars right?? and I do believe that it is a 3rd generation, I am not positive but that is what I come across, having heard people speak of their 1992 FD's. So yes it sounds realistic, and good choice on getting rid of the half potato for a 7!!!

It is possible for the car to be a 92 assuming it's RHD. My JDM FD was marked as a 92, all the documentation that came with the car shows that it was in-fact manufactured in 92. But if the car is LHD and marked as a 92, I'd question it

Thanks for all of your responses! I just got back home.

Yes, I'm also glad that I'm getting rid of the Z, it's going to be nice having that extra cash in my pockets!

In regards to the other questions, yeah generally Canada is a little more slack when it comes to imports. There's this garage by my work and there's currently an R34 sitting in drive way. Either it's here illegally or the 15-year rule no longer applies.

Either way, I'm actually more excited about getting this RX-7 than I was about getting my Z. The reason for this is this 7 is only 40hp shy from my Z and I'll still have money in my pockets to pay off my bills that I'm struggling with.

This is the one I was looking at:

The only thing that doesn't tickle my buttons is that eye-sore of a spoiler.

Attribute this to the screwy US practice of selling next year's model this year.

The 1993 RX-7 sold in the US throughout 1992. The earliest 1993s were built in late 1991. They sold at basically the same time in other countries, except that outside of the US they were labeled as 1992's.

My FD is a 94 but production date was late 92! must have been one of the first off the assembly line. and yes it truly is a 94... textured interior, tachmoter doesn't read to the hundreth RPM, my interior is tan but all my panels are black.

Those look to be apexi side skirts or replicas, whichever they are extremely hard to get.

Yes you will have more money in your pocket, but you will also have quite a few issues. 40 HP shy of your Z but I guarantee it's faster (assuming it's working properly). BTW if you get it ditch the wing (as you said) and get matching rims. That FD looks like it needs a love… Which that brings me to: if it looks abused in anyway WALK away. A mistreated FD will break your heart again and again before it loves you back.

I currently own a 1992, they are very common here in New Zealand and I have a friend who owns a 1991 FD3S, I have seen the rego sticker and it clearly shows it as a 1991 and it is getting turned into one very modified showcar. It is still the only 1991 version I have ever seen so they must be rare as hens teeth.

i'm sure payments on a 350Z are gonna be a lot less than the monthly spending on an FD when you figure in maintenance and repairs. haha

if anyone is spending the same amount of $$ for a car payment for maintance and repairs on an FD there is a huge problem.

The FD is expensive but not that expensive.

late 1991 would be the first out, but most were sold in 1992. The date of the car on the rego is from when the car was first registered not from when it was first made. If its a late 1993 and its a Japanese import then it will be series 1. IMO, best bet is too look for late 93 +, as these cars had most of the minor faults removed.

britain allows imports of the later models. You could pick up a 2002 model typeRS from Japan for about 20K, higher for quaility, but thats still alot cheaper with Euro.

I'm not trying to bust your bubble.. But FD's aren't really a car that you are going to save on money.. If you have never worked on them and lack local support, it could turn into a nightmare car and you might be dumping more money than your Z per month. Just aware of that.

Regarding the car you're looking at... WOW! I've not seen a SUPRA like spoiler on an FD since I bought my FD... Must be an old schooler who had that car and never updated..

Don't forget that the RX-7 weighs 2800 lbs and the Z weighs 500 lbs more, so that 40 hp difference doesn't really mean anything. What you will notice, however, is a difference in torque ;P
