My first suggestion would be to put gas in the car

No but seriously, pull out the gauge cluster and check the harness to make sure it's still plugged in. To pull out the hood that has all the gauges in it, literally just pull straight out. It takes quite a bit of force to get it out the first time, but it is doable. I found that it was easier to pop out the bottom, then hold it by the bottom and top and pull out.

There are a bunch of harnesses on the back, find the one behind the fuel gauge and make sure it's in good.

it's probably your fuel level sending unit. Under the carpet in the trunk, you can pull out the fuel pump and level sending unit assembly. You might first try cleaning the reostat area of the level sensor with some fine emery cloth. It worked well for me.

your float for the sensor in the gas tank fell off. that makes the sensor read more than empty. open up the gas tank and look for a little rectangular white plastic thing floating around. your baffling might be loose also which would cause the float to get knocked off.

Since we're on the subject of fuel gauge floats and such, what controls the small light on the fuel gauge that progressively comes on as you get toward empty? I had to replace the fuel tank a while ago, and now the light no longer works.

I'm paranoid removing the lid to the fuel tank that is underneath the rear carpet All that hissing and the smell of gas makes me think the sucker is gonna blow!! Any words of caution, or just take the sucker off (yes, with nothing flammable around, i know this!!)

there is a separate sensor for this light. it simply works by shorting out if it is immersed in gas and being an open circuit if there is no gas to short it. you probably forgot to plug something in or ripped off its wire or something. you can check the connectors with a continuity meter to check which pin on the connector it is....

You can release the pressure in the tank by taking the gas cap for the tank (on the outside of the car) off. It will release the pressure your talking about.
