Exclamation fuel filter questions

I was wondering who has experience in purchasing and/or changing their own fuel filter (FD of course)?

What i want to know is:

How do aftermarket brands compare to the factory filter BOTH in quality AND price? details please.

I can get a Fram filter for $24.
Is that a good price? (I was under the assumption that they costed more)

Do I get what I pay for?

Are there some aftermarket brands that are better than others or are they all the same?

Is the factory fuel filter made by Denso? (good or is there better)

How often should I change it?

Where can I get them? Thanks

I ordered mine through a local 'autozone' and it took about a week to get them in. I went with a stock one and you should change it out every 15k-20k miles. I don't know about the differences between brands but I do know that the k&n one you can clean out and reuse so it does have some benefits.

ahh, yes. Cost was about $20 and I think the cost of the k&n version is like $40 but I'm not to sure.

AFAIK, my filter is original with 83k miles on it (not my fault, I just bought the car). When I got the car, the acceleration was smooth, though there was a boost problem that limited the boost to less than 5 psi above 4500 rpm. Now that I have my boost fixed, I've noticed that there is a missing, or surging at higher RPM with 10 psi of boost.

The filter is on the immediate replacement list, but I'm curious if you think that's causing my problem. I've read a number of threads, and haven't seen anyone actually give the symptoms of a clogged filter, other than the usual "blown engine" answer.

Cheers,

A misfire sounds like the plugs
Did your engine light come on?

If you don't know how old all this stuff is you should change the plugs and wires, fuel and air filters, motor oil, differential and transmission fluid, brake bleed and fluid change and flush the coolant out.
I don't know if I forgot anything.

I've really noticed that when people take care of these cars they have no problems and motors last much longer.

sorry for being so general
I'm also about to fall asleep while typing this so if I misstated something forgive

I've been using non-mazda fuel filters for several years without problems. I change them myself at about 20-25K miles and without too much pain, but do release the pressure first like Series7 pointed out. It helps also to be really really quick when taking the old one off and putting the new one on.

rx7.com has some that fit like OEM. I used it, it's a whole lot cheaper than OEM.

Thanks for the comments. Believe me, all that stuff (and more) is on the change list. I'm hoping to defer most of it for a while, but I won't put off anything that's absolutely critical. I bought the car as a project, but I really won't have time to work on it for a few months. In the mean time, I just drive it about once a week to keep it exercised.

To answer your other question, nope, no engine light. The plugs are likely crap, so I'll take a look.

Thanks,

lovin my K&N washable filter

you do have to clean it frequently though, like every 3k miles....but I have mine set up with quick connects in the engine bay, so it only takes a couple of minutes to clean.....I can't believe how much crap it catches in just a few thousand miles

If it's such a pain to change why don't most people relocate it or use some sort of different aftermarket filter? It seems like you could get those inline filters I've seen in Summit and Jegs and they would do the trick.

Just a newbie wondering.

Are these any good as a replacement for the stock unit.

the one I got is a -6 AN barbed in and out.

Do you guys think this will hamper 15 psi with non-seq twins or it should handle the flow requirements ok??
