Not sure anyone knows! Only installed on 280hp models, maybe the extra 15hp gives the front end wings.

It dams the air in the front, of course.

Lift. Air dams can create a low pressure area under the front of the car.

Cooling. If the air can't go under, it has to go around or through the bumper inlet.

These are just wild *** guesses as I am not an engineer of this sort.

Other than aero, the only other possibility, is something to do with the second oil cooler - or cooling in general....for the life of me, couldn't imagine how it could achieve any outcome in that area though. Maybe the Japanese readers can shed some light.

Perhaps it's just a stiffener for the lower section of the intake. There isn't anything too structural on the bottom (at least on mine). Maybe the Mazda engineers expected the front lip to generate a lot of downforce. Just a guess.

In the HyperRev published "RX-7 magazine" # 016 I have there is and info add for "Auto Ex" parts and one thing they have are two aluminum strips that go right where that plastic piece is pictured above.

They have cut out an area in the plastic undertray behind the first strip through which you can see the radiator fans and the second taller strip goes at the rear of the plastic undertray.

Info add says it is a venturi.

So it creates a low pressure area to help evacuate the radiator exhaust flow. I imagine the stock piece does the same just is shorter and so has less chance of hitting objects in the road.

I second it. I believe Z06 have a similar device for the same purpose.
